- Libellus ist das lateinische Wort für „Büchlein, Heft, lose gefaltete Blätterlage“ (Plural libelli). - A libellus (plural libelli) in the Roman Empire was any brief document written on individual pages (as opposed to scrolls or tablets), particularly official documents issued by governmental authorities. The term libellus has particular historical significance for the libelli that were issued during the reign of Emperor Decius to citizens to certify performance of required pagan sacrifices in order to demonstrate loyalty to the authorities of the Roman Empire. During later periods libelli were issued as certificates of indulgence, in which the confessors or martyrs interceded for apostate Christians. (en)
- Libellus (łac. książeczka) – wydawany wszystkim obywatelom starożytnego Rzymu dokument stanowiący krótkie potwierdzenie faktu zarejestrowania przyznania obywatelstwa danej osobie w rzymskich archiwach. Po 4 roku n.e. za sprawą dekretu Oktawiana Augusta wszyscy obywatele mieli obowiązek rejestrować dzieci nie później, niż 30 dni po narodzeniu. Na potwierdzenie tego faktu wręczano im zbliżoną w formie do dyplomu wojskowego kopię wpisu, sporządzoną na drewnianej deszczułce i poświadczoną nazwiskami siedmiu świadków. Dokument ten służył za potwierdzenie obywatelstwa przez resztę życia. (pl)
- Al tempo dell'Impero romano il libello era una supplica indirizzata all'imperatore con cui si chiedevano diverse cose, dal trasferimento di un processo al tribunale imperiale alla riabilitazione di un condannato, oppure l'ottenimento o il mantenimento di sgravi fiscali e immunità fiscali. A indirizzare queste suppliche potevano essere sia singoli individui sia intere città. Con questo termine si indicava però anche un'opera satirica che attaccava gli imperatori o i privati cittadini. De meeste dateren uit het jaar 250 of kort daarna. De Romeinse keizer Decius vaardigde een edict uit, waarbij iedere burger van het Romeinse Rijk verplicht was de keizerlijke goden te aanbidden, onder het moto religio (religie) en pietas (plicht), met als doel het creëren van samenhang en stabiliteit in het Rijk. De burgers waren verplicht een openbare offerdienst te plegen in bijzijn van een officiële ambtenaar. Daarna kreeg hij of zij een document, een libellus.
