- El Mercado de la Merced és un mercat que es troba en l'extrem orient del centre històric de la Ciutat de Mèxic i és considerat el major mercat minorista d'aliments tradicionals de tota la ciutat. La zona en què està situat, també dita barrio de la Merced, ha estat sinònim d'activitat comercial des de principis del període de la Colònia, quan van arribar comerciants d'altres parts de la Nova Espanya. En una època, gairebé tot el barri estava ple de llocs de mercat i en la dècada de 1860 es va decidir construir un mercat permanent en els terrenys de l'antic Convent de la Mercè. En la primera meitat del segle XX, aquest mercat va ser el principal mercat majorista per a tota la ciutat. Va deixar de ser-ho quan es va crear un mercat central de proveïments durant la dècada de 1980, però la Mercè continua sent el major mercat minorista tradicional. En la primera mitad del siglo XX, este mercado fue el principal mayorista para toda la ciudad. Esto terminó cuando la Central de Abasto fue inaugurada en la década de 1980, pero la Merced sigue siendo el mayor mercado minorista tradicional. El área que rodea el mercado también es conocida por la prostitución flagrante que ocurre a cualquier hora del día y de la noche. The area, also called La Merced, has been synonymous with commercial activity since the early colonial period when traders arrived here from other parts of New Spain. At one time, nearly the entire neighborhood was filled with market stalls and in the 1860s it was decided to build a permanent market on the grounds of the old La Merced monastery. In the first half of the 20th century, this market was the major wholesaler for the entire city. This ended when the Central de Abasto was opened in the 1980s, but La Merced remains the largest traditional retail market. The market area is also known for flagrant prostitution in which women can be seen soliciting at all hours of the day and night.
