- Die letzten fünf Jahre (engl. Originaltitel The Last Five Years) ist ein Kammermusical mit Musik und Liedtexten von Jason Robert Brown. Es wurde im Jahr 2001 in Chicago uraufgeführt und im März 2002 im Minetta Lane Theatre am New Yorker Off-Broadway produziert. Die deutsche Fassung stammt von Wolfgang Adenberg und hatte am 18. Juni 2005 im Rex-Theater Wuppertal Premiere. Die Hauptrollen spielten Patrick Stanke und . Regie führten Daniel Witzke und Christoph Drewitz.Die Londoner Erstaufführung fand am 18. Juli 2006 in der Menier Chocolate Factory statt. Das Musical wurde mit und Anna Kendrick in den Hauptrollen verfilmt. Die Verfilmung wurde erstmals im Jahr 2014 beim Toronto International Film Festival gezeigt. Das Musical erzählt von der Beziehung eines Paares, Jamie und Cathy, die sich kennenlernen, heiraten und sich nach fünf Jahren wieder trennen. Dabei wählt Brown eine ungewöhnliche Erzählweise: Die Handlung wird ausschließlich durch vierzehn Lieder transportiert, wobei es kaum gesprochene Dialoge gibt. Jamie und Cathy wechseln sich in ihren Liedern ab. Während Jamie die Geschichte ihrer Beziehung vom Beginn an erzählt, blickt Cathy zurück, von ihrer Trennung bis zum ersten Rendezvous der beiden. Nur einmal, bei der Hochzeit, treffen sich die beiden Erzählstränge. (de)

Desde entonces ha tenido numerosas producciones tanto en Estados Unidos como internacionalmente. La historia explora una relación de cinco años entre Jamie Wellerstein, un novelista de ascenso, y Cathy Hyatt, una actriz batallando. El espectáculo utiliza una forma de storytelling en donde la historia del punto de vista de Cathy está contada en orden cronológico inverso (empezando la obra al final del matrimonio), y la historia del punto de vista de Jamie es contada en orden cronológico. Los personajes no interactúan directamente a excepción de una canción cuando sus líneas temporales se cruzan. The Last Five Years fue inspirado en el matrimonio fallido de Brown con Theresa O'Neill. - The Last Five Years is een tweepersoonsmusical over Jamie en Cathy en hun vijfjarige huwelijk, geschreven door . Al in de eerste vijf minuten wordt duidelijk dat dit liefdesverhaal geen happy end heeft. Jamie vertelt het verhaal van hun relatie in chronologische volgorde (van begin tot eind). Cathy daarentegen gaat van het einde terug naar het begin. De tweede verhalen kruisen op de bruiloft, het enige moment waarop er rechtstreekse interactie is tussen de twee hoofdrolspelers. In juni 2004 ging de eerste Nederlandse productie (als eerste niet-engelstalige versie ter wereld) in een in recensies bejubelde vertaling/bewerking van Florus van Rooijen in première waarin Jennifer van Brenk en Rob Pelzer de rollen van Eva en Robin vertolkten. In het theaterseizoen 2006-2007 maakte producent een eigen versie, met een vertaling van Allard Blom. Sanne werd gespeeld door Birgit Schuurman en Ara Halici nam de rol van Jona op zich. In Vlaanderen ging de voorstelling van start in juni 2008, door producent Judas Theaterproducties in een aangepaste bewerking van Allard Blom. Ann Van den Broeck en Jan Schepens kropen hier in de huid van Sanne en Nathan. De productie kreeg in 2008 vier Vlaamse Musicalprijzen voor de beste musical, de twee hoofdrolspelers en de beste arrangementen. In 2014 bracht het Amsterdamse M-Lab een bewerking, geregisseerd door Benno Hoogveld met in de hoofdrollen William Spaaij als Nathan en Michelle van de Ven als Sanne.
