- Josep II de Constantinoble fou bisbe d'Efes i patriarca de Constantinoble entre el 1416 i el 1439. Era abans de ser elegit patriarca. L'emperador Joan VIII Paleòleg (1425-1448) tenia molt d'interès en la unió de les dues esglésies per raons polítiques i el patriarca hi va donar suport, però volia fer el concili a Constantinoble encara que finalment va acceptar que el concili es fes a Basilea el 1434 (Acta Concil. Basil. Sessio xix.). Els delegats de l'església grega van ser convidats pel papa per prendre el seu partit en el conflicte plantejat al concili i van decidir participar en el concili rival que es feia a Ferrara (1437) i que després fou transferit a Florència. A aquest concili va assistir Josep II i va intentar evitar reconèixer la supremacia del Papa però va mostrar un clar suport a la unió. Al final del concili va caure malalt i fou forçat a subscriure els dogmes de l'església llatina en els punts de conflicte, que havien estat llegit per Bessarió que havia omès en la lectura alguns punts conflictius. Josep II probablement estava ben predisposat a la unió i va destituir els clergues que s'hi oposaven. Va morir a Florència al final del concili, el 10 de juny de 1439 i li va succeir . Va escriure Epistola ad Concilium Busiliense i Bulla plumbea missa Concilio Basiliensi, i a més a més la seva sentencia (Γνώμη, Sententia) al concili i la Τελευταῖα γνώμη, Extrema Sententia, escrita la nit de la seva mort. Joseph, ein Sohn des bulgarischen Prinzen und späteren Zaren Iwan Schischman, war Mönch in einem Athos-Kloster und wurde 1393 zum Metropoliten von Ephesus gewählt. Am 21. Mai 1416 wurde er Patriarch von Konstantinopel. Joseph nahm 1438/39 am Konzil von Ferrara-Florenz teil, auf dem die Einheit zwischen Ost- und Westkirche wiederhergestellt werden sollte. Er war, wie der damalige byzantinische Kaiser Johannes VIII. und der russische Metropolit Isidor von Kiew, ein Unionsbefürworter und unterwarf sich kurz vor seinem Tod dem römischen Primatsanspruch. Das auf dem Konzil erarbeitete Unionsdekret wurde von 31 Bischöfen sowie dem byzantinischen Kaiser unterzeichnet, von Seiten der Orthodoxie aufgrund von bleibenden Differenzen in Glaubensfragen aber nicht dauerhaft rezipiert. 21 der Unterzeichner widerriefen ihre Unterschrift bis 1445. Die sterblichen Überreste von Joseph II. sind heute in der Kirche Santa Maria Novella in Florenz beigesetzt. (de)

Κατόπιν διετέλεσε Μητροπολίτης Εφέσου, και το 1416 εξελέγη Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης. Ήταν λόγιος ιεράρχης και συνετός Πατριάρχης. Αναγκάστηκε όμως από τον Αυτοκράτορα Ιωάννη Η΄ Παλαιολόγο να ηγηθεί αντιπροσωπείας των Ορθοδόξων στη Σύνοδο Φερράρας-Φλωρεντίας. Εκεί προσπάθησε να διεξαγάγει κανονικό θεολογικό διάλογο και να υπερασπίσει τα δικαιώματα του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου, ενώ ο Αυτοκράτορας παρενέβαινε πιεστικά υπέρ της Ένωσης των Εκκλησιών. Πέθανε στη Φλωρεντία στις 10 Ιουνίου 1439, στην όγδοη δεκαετία της ζωής του, πριν από την υπογραφή της Ένωσης και ετάφη σε παρεκκλήσιο της Αγίας Μαρίας της Νέας (Santa Maria Novella) στη Φλωρεντία. - Joseph II (1360 – 10 June 1439) was Patriarch of Constantinople from 1416 to 1439, of Bulgarian origin. Born the (possibly illegitimate) son of Ivan Shishman of Bulgaria in 1360, little is known of his early life before he became a monk on Mount Athos. He became Metropolitan of Ephesus in 1393, before being elected Patriarch of Constantinople on 21 May 1416. Together with Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaiologos, 23 Metropolitan bishops and about 700 scholars and theologians, he took part in the Council of Florence. While in Florence, he was quartered in the Palazzo Ferrantini. He is portrayed in Benozzo Gozzoli's frescoes in the Magi Chapel of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, which celebrates the entrance of the Byzantine dignitaries in the city. Joseph was very old and ill and died on 10 June 1439. His death caused much grief to all present at the council, as he was a fervent supporter of union between the Churches; before his death, he drew up and signed an important pro-union declaration for the council. His grave in the Dominican convent church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence survives, with an elaborate fresco portrait in a semi-Byzantine style. He was succeeded as Patriarch of Constantinople by Metrophanes II, who was appointed by Emperor John VIII on account of his similarly pro-unionist sentiments. He was cousin of Constantine II of Bulgaria. (en)
