- John Elphinstone (auch: John Elphinston) (1722 – 28. Februar 1785) war ein hochrangiger britischer Marineoffizier, der nach 1770 mit Zustimmung der Admiralität während der Zeit der auch die Marine betreffenden Reformen unter der russischen Zarin Katharina der Großen eng mit der Kaiserlich Russischen Marine zusammenarbeitete. Zusammen mit dem in Schottland geborenen Admiral Samuel Greigh oder Samuil Karlovich Greig (Самуил Карлович Грейг), wie er in Russland genannt wurde, und Admiral Sir Charles Knowles war Elphinstone Mitglied des Marinestabes unter der Leitung von Graf Alexei Grigorjewitsch Orlow. Obwohl es diesem an Erfahrung in der Seekriegführung mangelte, konnte er die osmanische Flotte in der Schlacht zu Tschesme in der Nähe der Insel Chios vor der äußersten Westküste der Türkei besiegen. Together with the Scottish-born Samuel Greig, or Samuil Karlovich Greig (Самуил Карлович Грейг), as he was known in Russia, and Admiral Sir Charles Knowles, Elphinstone was a member of the naval staff, headed by Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov, which, although it lacked naval experience, was able to defeat the Turkish fleet at the Battle of Chesma Bay, near Chios Island, off the far western coast of Turkey. Il passa en 1768 au service de Catherine II, parvint au grade d'amiral de Russie, et se signala contre les Turcs, dont il détruisit la flotte dans la baie de Tchesmé et dans le golfe de Napoli de Romanie. Assieme allo scozzese Samuel Greig ed all'ammiraglio sir Charles Knowles, Elphinstone fu un membro dello staff navale del conte Aleksej Grigor'evič Orlov-Česmenskij il quale, mancando di adeguata esperienza navale, si affidò agli ammiragli inglesi per dare il via alle prime operazioni russe contro l'Impero ottomano. - John Elphinston (Elphinstone), ros. Джон Эльфинстон (ur. 1722, zm. 1785) – angielski i rosyjski wojskowy, kontradmirał, dowódca eskadry floty rosyjskiej w bitwie pod Nauplion. Wyróżnił się podczas wojny siedmioletniej. W 1768 przeszedł na służbę w rosyjskiej marynarce wojennej w stopniu kontradmirała. W 1770 został wysłany z Kronsztadu z eskadrą jako wsparcie dla adm. G.A. Spiridowa dla operacji podjętych we wschodnim akwenie śródziemnomorskim (w archipelagu wysp greckich). Wskutek sporu kompetencyjnego ze Spiridowem, naczelne dowodzenie połączonymi siłami przejął ówczesny faworyt carycy hr. Aleksiej Orłow. Elphinston ze swą eskadrą odegrał decydującą rolę w bitwie pod Nauplion i pod Czesmą, przypisując sobie później główną rolę w zwycięstwach. W ich następstwie proponował przejście okrętów rosyjskiej flotylli w Dardanele i opanowanie Stambułu, pomysł ten jednak został odrzucony przez Orłowa i Spiridowa. Podejmując tę akcję samowolnie, utracił jeden z okrętów, narażając się na niełaskę Katarzyny II (obciążony też podejrzeniem o przywłaszczenie pieniędzy). Choć w związku z tym nie został wprost ukarany (caryca nie zamierzała zakłócać korzystnych stosunków z Anglią), wstrzymano mu jednak należne wynagrodzenie. Obrażony tym Elphinston zrezygnował ze służby na rzecz Rosji i powrócił do kraju. W służbie korony brytyjskiej uczestniczył później w angielskich wojnach kolonialnych i w wojnie z Francją. (pl)
