- جيمس برانش كابل (بالإنجليزية: James Branch Cabell) (1879 – 1958) روائي أمريكي، اشتغل بالصحافة والحفر في المناجم، وبدأ بروايات تمتاز بذاتية واضحة، تخيل بلداً في القرون الوسطى اسمه (بواكتسمة) وجعله مسرحاً لرواياته. كان أول كتاب له «ظل النسر» عام 1904، وفي العام الذي يليه بدأ بكتابة «الجرأة والإقدام» الذي صدر عام1907. بدأت شهرة كابل عندما كتب رواية «جيرجن»، وأنتج سلسلة مكونة من ثمانية عشر مجلد أسماها «سيرة حياة مانويل». في عام 1930 اتجه نحو الرواية الساخرة، وله مقالات نقدية عديدة. Mencken, Edmund Wilson, and Sinclair Lewis. His works were considered escapist and fit well in the culture of the 1920s, when they were most popular. For Cabell, veracity was "the one unpardonable sin, not merely against art, but against human welfare." Although escapist, Cabell's works are ironic and satirical. Mencken disputed Cabell's claim to romanticism and characterized him as "really the most acidulous of all the anti-romantics. His gaudy heroes ... chase dragons precisely as stockbrockers play golf." Cabell saw art as an escape from life, but found that, once the artist creates his ideal world, it is made up of the same elements that make the real one. Interest in Cabell declined in the 1930s, a decline that has been attributed in part to his failure to move out of his fantasy niche despite the onset of World War II. Alfred Kazin said that "Cabell and Hitler did not inhabit the same universe". The library at Virginia Commonwealth University is named after Cabell. (en)

Cabell werd geboren in Richmond, Virginia als zoon van Robert Gamble Cabell II en Anne Harris Branch, en bracht zijn schooltijd door aan het William en Mary College. Tijdens zijn afstuderen gaf hij daar ook zelf les in Frans en Grieks. In 1901 werkte hij kort als reporter bij de en in de volgende jaren hield hij zich ook bezig met genealogisch onderzoek. Hij schreef vele korte verhalen en artikelen, waarvan sommige werden gepubliceerd in nationale tijdschriften zoals Harper's Monthly Magazine en Saturday Evening Post. In 1913 keerde hij terug in Richmond en trouwde daar met Rebecca Priscilla Bradley Shepherd, een weduwe met 5 kinderen uit een eerder huwelijk. Ze kregen nog een zoon, Ballard Hartwell Cabell. Toen in 1919 Cabells boek Jurgen uitkwam, stond heel Amerika op zijn kop vanwege het volgens velen pornografische karakter van het verhaal. Nadat hij in 1935 een ernstig vorm van longontsteking opliep, trok James zich samen met zijn vrouw langzaam terug uit het openbare leven. In 1949 overleed Rebecca na een hartverlamming. James hertrouwde nog met Margaret Waller Freeman, die hij al een aantal jaren kende. Op 79-jarige leeftijd overleed James aan de gevolgen van een hersenbloeding in zijn huis te Richmond. (nl)
