- Armando Diaz was a light cruiser of the Condottieri class and the sister-ship of the Luigi Cadorna. She served in the Regia Marina during World War II. She was built by OTO, La Spezia, and named after Armando Diaz, an Italian Field Marshal of World War I. She was launched on 29 April 1933 and served in the Mediterranean after her completion. From 1 September 1934 until February 1935 she made a cruise to Australia and New Zealand. During the Spanish Civil War she served in the western Mediterranean and was based at Palma de Mallorca and Melilla. In July 1940, she was present at the Battle of Calabria, also called the battle of Punta Stilo. In October she took part in a mission to Albania, and in December she came under direct orders of Supermarina (Naval Headquarters) for special duties in connection with the protection of traffic to Albania from January 1941. However, the following month an important supply convoy to Tripoli required her use for cover, in company with the light cruiser Giovanni dalle Bande Nere and some destroyers. In the course of this operation the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the British submarine HMS Upright off the island of Kerkennah in the early hours of 25 February. It took the Italian cruiser only six minutes to sink after her magazine detonated, with the loss of 484 men. (en)

- L'Armando Diaz fu un incrociatore leggero della Regia Marina italiana, appartenente alla classe Luigi Cadorna, la seconda del tipo Condottieri. Venne così battezzata in onore del generale della prima guerra mondiale Armando Diaz. Il motto della nave era estratto dal testo del Bollettino della Vittoria del 4 novembre 1918: Con fede incrollabile e tenace valore. Inquadrato nella IV Divisione incrociatori, non disponendo di una protezione sufficiente ad operare in azioni di squadra, durante la seconda guerra mondiale venne impiegato perlopiù in ruoli di scorta e di protezione ai convogli italiani e tedeschi ed era dotato degli idrovolanti IMAM Ro.43. L'unica battaglia a cui poteva prendere parte fu quella di Punta Stilo del 9 luglio 1940, scontro cui tuttavia non poté partecipare attivamente perché costretto a rientrare a causa di problemi alle macchine. Alle 3:43 del 25 febbraio 1941, mentre scortava un convoglio per la Libia assieme al gemello Giovanni delle Bande Nere e ai caccia Ascari e Corazziere, fu silurato dal sommergibile della Royal Navy HMS Upright e affondò di prua in soli sei minuti, trascinando con sé 464 uomini su un totale di 611 che componevano l'equipaggio (secondo altre fonti i morti furono 500 su 633 uomini a bordo). La perdita del Diaz è esemplare di come le prime due classi della serie Condottieri (Di Giussano e Cadorna) avessero una protezione troppo scarsa: andarono infatti perdute (tutte per siluramento, anche se questo non ebbe un ruolo primario nella perdita del Da Barbiano e del Colleoni) cinque delle sei unità che le componevano, mentre solo una delle sei unità delle tre serie successive ("Montecuccoli", "Duca d'Aosta" e "Duca degli Abruzzi") fu affondata, e molte di queste unità sopravvissero a siluramenti (ad esempio il Garibaldi, il Duca degli Abruzzi o l'Attendolo). Cantieri La Spezia e foi lançado ao mar em julho de 1932, sendo comissionado na frota italiana em abril do ano seguinte. Era armado com uma bateria principal composta por oito canhões de 152 milímetros montados em quatro torres de artilharia duplas, tinha um deslocamento de pouco mais de sete mil toneladas e conseguia alcançar uma velocidade máxima de 36 nós (68 quilômetros por hora). O cruzador serviu no Mediterrâneo depois de entrar em serviço e viajou para a Austrália e Nova Zelândia de 1934 a 1935, pouco depois participando da intervenção italiana na Guerra Civil Espanhola. Na Segunda Guerra Mundial, participou da Batalha da Calábria em julho de 1940 e depois de operações de escolta de comboios para o Norte da África. O Armando Diaz partiu em fevereiro de 1941 para uma das operações de escolta e cobertura, porém foi interceptado pelo submarino britânico HMS Upright próximo das Ilhas Kerkennah e torpedeado, afundando logo em seguida.
