- IPTC-NAA-Standard (nebo jen IPTC) slouží k ukládání textových informací do obrazových souborů (např. JPEG nebo TIFF). Tento standard byl definován zhruba v roce 1990 jako (IIM) pro novinářské účely. Textové informace se ukládají v definovaném formátu do části souboru k tomu určené. Prostřednictvím IPTC tak lze přímo do obrazových souborů zapsat údaje jako autorská práva, jméno autora, titulek fotografie nebo klíčová slova pro vyhledávání. Tento způsob ukládání metadat je rozšířen zejména u společností spravujících velká množství fotografií, např. u zpravodajských agentur nebo fotobank. S pomocí vhodného softwaru je tedy správa obrazových archivů jednodušší a vyhledání požadovaných fotografií otázkou okamžiku. IPTC-NAA-Standard vyvinul IPTC spolu s NAA (Newspaper Association of America) v zásadě pro všechny druhy médií - text, fotografie, grafiky, audio i video. Částečně jej převzala společnost Adobe Systems Inc. pro popisování obsahu grafických souborů ve svém bitmapovém editoru Adobe Photoshop. V mezičase byl jako nový formát pro výměnu informací v obrazových souborech navržen a firma Adobe přišla se svým formátem XMP. Avšak vzhledem k tomu, že nové produkty od Adobe Systems Inc. XMP už nepodporují, lze soudit, že význam standardu IPTC je znovu na vzestupu. (cs)

- The Information Interchange Model (IIM) is a file structure and set of metadata attributes that can be applied to text, images and other media types. It was developed in the early 1990s by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to expedite the international exchange of news among newspapers and news agencies. The full IIM specification includes a complex data structure and a set of metadata definitions. Although IIM was intended for use with all types of news items — including simple text articles — a subset found broad worldwide acceptance as the standard embedded metadata used by news and commercial photographers. Information such as the name of the photographer, copyright information and the caption or other description can be embedded either manually or automatically. IIM metadata embedded in images are often referred to as "IPTC headers", and can be easily encoded and decoded by most popular photo editing software. The Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) has largely superseded IIM's file structure, but the IIM image attributes are defined in the IPTC Core schema for XMP and most image manipulation programs keep the XMP and non-XMP IPTC attributes synchronized. Because of its nearly universal acceptance among photographers — even amateurs — this is by far IPTC's most widely used standard. On the other hand, the use of IIM structure and metadata for text and graphics is mainly limited to European news agencies. (en)

Les spécifications IIM complètes consistent en une structure de données et un ensemble de métadonnées complexes. Bien que prévues initialement pour tout type de support, elles ont principalement été utilisées dans le monde par les journaux, les agences de presse et les photographes. Les métadonnées souvent utilisées sont le nom de l'auteur ou du photographe, les informations sur le copyright et des informations descriptives.
