- Hunfrid va ser marcgravi d'Ístria i, segons algunes fonts, duc de Friül des de 799 al voltant de 804, quan un duc de nom Joan governava a Ístria. Va ser el fundador de la família dels Hunfridings. Hunfrid apareix a Ístria com a marchio per primera vegada el 799, el mateix any en què va morir el duc Eric de Friül. Era un alemany i un compte de (o a) Rhaetia (Rètia), esmentat el 806 i 808. Sobre la base de la seva presència en una llista de personatges al libris memorialis de Reichenau i Sankt Gallen, es presumeix que es va casar amb Hitta (Hidda), una Udalrichinga i, probablement, la neboda o neta de Gerold de Vintzgau i per tant una cosina o neboda del predecessor d'Hunfrid a Friül, Eric. Amb base en els mateixos libris memorialis, fou probablement el pare d'Adalbert, el seu successor a Rhaetia, d'Odalric, que es va convertir en comte de Barcelona, a l'altra cantó de l'Imperi, i d'Hunfrid II, que es va convertir en dux super Redicam (duc de la Rètia superior) i ancestre dels posteriors ducs de Suàbia de la casa dels Hunfridings, Burcard I, Burcard II i Burcard III. - Hunfrid (Latin: Unfredus) was the Margrave of Istria and, according to some sources, Duke of Friuli from 799 to c. 804, when a Duke John was ruling Istria. He was the founder of the family called the Hunfridings. Hunfrid first appears in Istria as marchio in 799, the same year that Eric of Friuli died. He was probably an Aleman, although the historian of early medieval Raetia, Elizabeth Meyer-Marthaler, considered him of Frankish origin. He was the count of Rhaetia in 806 and 808. A record of his presiding over a public court at Rankweil in his capacity as count of Rhaeta (Reciarum comis) survives. He interrogated witnesses, ordered boundaries of a disputed property walked out, ordered judges (scabini) to make a finding and issued a verdict in writing. The surviving record describes him as a vir inluster. Based on his presence in a list of personages in the libri memoriales of Reichenau and Sankt Gallen, he is presumed to have married Hitta (Hidda), an and probably the niece or granddaughter of Gerold of Vinzgouw and thus a cousin or niece of Hunfrid's predecessor in Italy, Eric. Based on the same memorial books, he is probably the father of , his successor in Rhaetia, Odalric, who became Count of Barcelona in another part of the Empire, and , who became dux super Redicam (duke over Rhaetia) and father of the later Hunfriding Dukes of Swabia.
