Garanhuns is a city in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Located in the Borborema Plateau, the town is known as the "Suíça Pernambucana" (Pernambucan Switzerland) due to its elevation and relatively cool climate. It is also known as "Cidade das Flores" ("City of Flowers") or "Cidade da Garoa" ("City of Drizzle"). Garañun (Garanhun) was an extinct, undocumented language once spoken by an indigenous tribe in the Serra dos Garanhuns.

Originalmente, suas terras eram ocupadas por povos índigenas do ramo dos Cariris, quando, por volta do século XVII, brancos e negros fugidos da sujeição dos holandeses ocuparam as regiões de brejos, lá estabelecendo-se em aldeias esparsas. Em 29 de setembro de 1658, o mestre de campo Nicolau Aranha Pacheco, o capitão Cosmo de Brito Cação, Antonio Fernandes Aranha e Ambrósio Aranha de Farias receberam, do governador na época em exercício, André Vidal de Negreiros, uma sesmaria com cerca de 20 léguas de extensãoː um dos lotes da sesmaria se localizava nos campos de Garanhuns e outro lote se localizava em Panema. Nesse mesmo ano, foi fundado o Sítio Garcia, situado na região onde atualmente se localiza o distrito sede do município. Garanhuns é o centro mais diversificado do agreste meridional, sendo polo de 32 municípios, concentrando, em seu entorno, mais de um milhão de habitantes. Garanhuns é, também, um centro regional de saúde e educação. O município, pelo seu diversificado comércio e oferta de serviços, tem no turismo, um importante fator de geração de emprego, renda e desenvolvimento, dispondo de uma grande rede de empresas prestadoras de serviços e de hotéis.
