In den Vereinigten Staaten erreichte das Album #24 der Pop-Charts, in Großbritannien #27. Das Album bedeutete eine Änderung des Sounds für die Band, die nun psychedelische Elemente in ihre Musik einbrachte. Da es sich um eines der ersten psychedelischen Rockalben überhaupt handelt, gilt Fifth Dimension als eines der einflussreichsten Rockalben der 1960er Jahre. Der Veröffentlichung des Albums ging, wie auch bei den beiden ersten Alben der Byrds, eine Hit-Single voraus. Am 14. März erschien bei Columbia Eight Miles High, das in den Staaten bei #14 der Single-Charts seinen Höhepunkt erreichte, in Großbritannien bei #24. Zum ersten Mal handelte es sich bei der größten Hitsingle des Albums um eine Eigenkomposition der Band. Die B-Seite Why? war auf dem Originalalbum nicht enthalten, erschien jedoch später in den Bonustracks der CD-Neuveröffentlichung. Nach der Aufnahme der Single verließ Gene Clark die Band. Am 13. Juni erschien die zweite Single-Auskopplung in Form von 5D (Fifth Dimension) mit der B-Seite Captain Soul, die sowohl in Amerika als auch in Großbritannien an den Top 40 scheiterte. Nach Veröffentlichung des Albums kam am 6. September noch eine weitere Single auf den Markt: Mr. Spaceman hatte etwas mehr Erfolg als 5D und kletterte in den amerikanischen Charts bis #36. - Fifth Dimension is the third album by the American rock band the Byrds and was released in July 1966 on Columbia Records. Most of the album was recorded following the February 1966 departure of the band's principal songwriter Gene Clark. In an attempt to compensate for Clark's absence, guitarists Jim McGuinn and David Crosby increased their songwriting output. In spite of this, the loss of Clark resulted in an album with four cover versions and an instrumental, which critics have described as "wildly uneven" and "awkward and scattered". However, it was the first Byrds album not to include any songs written by Bob Dylan, whose material had previously been a mainstay of the band's repertoire. The album peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and reached number 27 on the UK Albums Chart. Two preceding singles, "Eight Miles High" and "5D (Fifth Dimension)", were included on the album, with the former just missing the Top 10 of the Billboard singles chart. Additionally, a third single taken from the album, "Mr. Spaceman", managed to reach the U.S. Top 40. Upon release, Fifth Dimension was widely regarded as the band's most experimental album to date and is today considered by critics to be influential in originating the musical genre of psychedelic rock. Les Byrds sont alors à une époque charnière : le principal compositeur du groupe, Gene Clark, est parti (officiellement en raison de sa peur de l'avion, l'empêchant de participer aux tournées, sans doute également à cause de la pression quotidienne d'un groupe à succès) et les membres restant décident de poursuivre dans la voie psychédélique ouverte par le dernier single Eight Miles High. Aucune reprise de Bob Dylan ne figure sur le disque, contrairement aux deux premiers albums, où elles avaient fait la renommée du groupe. Les arpèges aériens de guitare 12 cordes laissent place aux influences du raga indien et dans une moindre mesure à celles du jazz de John Coltrane. Du côté des textes, les thèmes classiques de l'amour sont abandonnées au profit de considérations plus mystiques, voire futuristes (5D, Mr. Spaceman). Mais les Byrds restent profondément attachés à leurs racines folks comme en témoignent les adaptations de chansons traditionnelles du répertoire américain (Wild Mountain Thyme, John Riley). David Crosby commence à occuper la place laissée vacante par Gene Clark et se révèle un compositeur audacieux quoique encore hésitant.
