- السمية البيئية هي موضوع دراسة علم السموم البيئية والذي يعد فرعا من فروع علم السموم وعلم البيئة، يشير مصطلح السمية البيئية إلى إمكانية تأثير الضغوط البيولوجية أو الكيميائية أو الفيزيائية على النظم البيئية. قد تحدث مثل هذه الضغوطات في البيئة الطبيعية بكثافات أو تركيزات أو مستويات عالية بما يكفي لتعطيل الكيمياء الحيوية الطبيعية وعلم وظائف الأعضاء والسلوك وتفاعلات الكائنات الحية التي تشكل النظام البيئي. وعلم السموم البيئية هو أحد فروع علم السموم المعنية بدراسة التأثيرات السامة الناتجة عن الملوثات الطبيعية أو الاصطناعية على مكونات النظم البيئية والحيوانية والتي تشتمل على الإنسان، والنباتات والميكروبات، في سياق متكامل. - L'ecotoxicitat és un concepte que uneix els de l'ecologia i la toxicologia per a fer referència a l'objecte d'estudi de l'ecotoxicologia, que són els agents biològics, químics o físics que afecten part o la totalitat d'ecosistemes. Inclou els aspectes sanitaris i els ecològics. Pot ser a causa de l'acció de l'ésser humà (causes antropogèniques) o bé ocórrer a la natura amb una tal densitat, concentració o quantitat prou alta com per a afectar la bioquímica o fisiologia natural, el comportament i les interaccions dels organismes vius que hi habiten. - Ecotoxicity, the subject of study of the field of ecotoxicology (a portmanteau of ecology and toxicology), refers to the potential for biological, chemical or physical stressors to affect ecosystems. Such stressors might occur in the natural environment at densities, concentrations or levels high enough to disrupt the natural biochemistry, physiology, behaviour and interactions of the living organisms that comprise the ecosystem. Ecotoxicology has been defined as, "the branch of toxicology concerned with the study of toxic effects, caused by natural or synthetic pollutants, to the constituents of ecosystems, animal (including human), vegetable and microbial, in an integral context". - Ekotoksyna – substancja lub czynnik mająca szkodliwy wpływ na środowisko naturalne. Głównymi przyczynami obecności ekotoksyn w środowisku są: przemysł, chemizacja rolnictwa czy czynniki związane z rozwojem cywilizacyjnym, takie jak silne pola elektromagnetyczne występujące w pobliżu linii przesyłowych oraz hałas. Naturalnymi źródłami są między innymi erupcje wulkanów, które emitują duże ilości związków siarki, chloru oraz pyłu. Substancje wprowadzane do środowiska przez działalność człowieka to na przykład: pył, dwutlenek siarki, WWA, metale ciężkie, nawozy i pestycydy. Najtrwalsze substancje organiczne zagrażające środowisku zostały ujęte w Konwencji sztokholmskiej w sprawie trwałych zanieczyszczeń organicznych. (pl)
