- Drowned God: Conspiracy of the Ages is a 1996 science fiction adventure game developed by Epic Multimedia Group and published by Inscape. The game propounds the conspiracy theory that all of human history is a lie and that the human race's development and evolution were aided by extraterrestrials. The player attempts to uncover the truth through the course of the game by traveling to a variety of different worlds, interacting with historical and fictional characters, and solving puzzles. Drowned God is based on a forged manuscript written by Harry Horse in 1983, purported to have been written by 19th-century poet Richard Henry Horne, who shares Horse's birth name. After facing legal trouble and fines when he attempted to sell the text, Horse shelved it until playing Myst and The 7th Guest in the mid-1990s, whereupon he decided a first-person adventure game would be the best way to tell the manuscript's story. Producer Algy Williams hired a team of multimedia artists and programmers to help Horse develop Drowned God. Upon its release, the game sold well, but it quickly faded in popularity due to bugs and a lack of patches. Drowned God's concept and visuals were widely praised, while its gameplay, audio, and puzzles received more varied responses. A planned sequel never came to fruition. (en)

Le jeu est centré sur une théorie du complot affirmant que l’histoire de l’humanité est un mensonge et que l’évolution de la race humaine est l’œuvre des extraterrestres. Le joueur tente de découvrir la vérité en voyageant dans différents mondes dans lesquels il doit interagir avec des personnages historiques ou de fictions et résoudre des énigmes. Le jeu est basé sur un livre écrit par en 1983. Ayant fait face à des soucis juridiques lorsqu’il essaye de vendre son texte, celui-ci ne parvient pas à faire publier son manuscrit. Après avoir joué à Myst et The 7th Guest dans les années 1990, il a cependant l’idée d’en faire un jeu vidéo d’aventure. Pour cela, il est aidé par le producteur qui engage des artistes et des programmeurs pour l’assister dans le développement du jeu. À sa sortie, le jeu se vend bien mais sa popularité décline rapidement du fait de nombreux bugs et de l’absence de patch. Le concept du jeu et ses graphismes sont bien reçu par les critiques, son gameplay, ses effets sonores et ses énigmes ne faisant en revanche pas l’unanimité. Une suite est au départ prévue mais son développement est finalement abandonné. (fr)
