- Kindheit und Jugend auf Samoa (englischer Originaltitel: Coming of Age in Samoa) ist eine Monografie der amerikanischen Ethnologin Margaret Mead. Sie beruht auf ihrer Forschungsarbeit zur Adoleszenz, insbesondere der Adoleszenz von Mädchen auf der samoanischen Insel Ta'u. Mead befasst sich mit den Einzelheiten des sexuellen Verhaltens Jugendlicher in der Gesellschaft Samoas zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie verdeutlicht darin ihre Auffassung, dass in erster Linie kulturelle Gegebenheiten und nicht die biologischen Grundlagen die psychosexuelle Entwicklung Jugendlicher bestimmen. Die Veröffentlichung im Jahre 1928 machte Mead zur berühmtesten Ethnologin ihrer Zeit. Die Monographie wurde zum meistgelesenen ethnologischen Buch bis zu Napoleon Chagnons Yanomamö:The Fierce People. Bis heute ist es Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Diskussionen und gilt als Standardwerk der , wie auch für Themenbereiche der Familiensoziologie, der Adoleszenz- und Genderforschung, der sozialen Normen und Einstellungen. In den 1980er Jahren stellte der Anthropologe Derek Freeman Meads Forschungsansatz, -methoden und -ergebnisse in Frage. Freemans Kritik wurde seinerseits von einem Großteil der Ethnologen als einseitig und unzutreffend zurückgewiesen. - Coming of Age in Samoa: A Psychological Study of Primitive Youth for Western Civilisation is a 1928 book by American anthropologist Margaret Mead based upon her research and study of youth – primarily adolescent girls – on the island of Taʻū in the Samoan Islands. The book details the sexual life of teenagers in Samoan society in the early 20th century, and theorizes that culture has a leading influence on psychosexual development. First published in 1928, the book launched Mead as a pioneering researcher and as the most famous anthropologist in the world. Since its first publication, Coming of Age in Samoa was the most widely read book in the field of anthropology until Napoleon Chagnon's Yanomamö: The Fierce People overtook it. The book has sparked years of ongoing and intense debate and controversy on questions pertaining to society, culture, and science. It is a key text in the nature versus nurture debate, as well as in discussions on issues relating to family, adolescence, gender, social norms, and attitudes. In the 1980s, Derek Freeman , and argued that she was hoaxed into counterfactually believing that Samoan culture had more relaxed sexual norms than Western culture. However, several members of the anthropology community have rejected Freeman's criticism, accusing him of cherry picking his data, and misrepresenting both Mead's research and the interviews that he conducted. Mead's field work for "Coming of Age" was also scrutinized, and major discrepancies were found between her published statements and her field data. Samoans themselves tend to be critical of what Mead wrote of their culture, especially her claim that adolescent promiscuity was socially acceptable in Samoa in the 1920s. (en)

Uno studio psicologico della gioventù primitiva ad uso della società occidentale (Coming of Age in Samoa: A Psychological Study of Primitive Youth for Western Civilization), tradotto anche come L'adolescenza in Samoa, è un saggio antropologico pubblicato da Margaret Mead nel 1928. Il saggio sintetizza i risultati delle ricerche dell'autrice nelle Samoa americane e ottenne fin da subito un grande successo, diventando uno dei libri di antropologia più letti del Novecento. Il libro ebbe cinque successive edizioni nel corso degli anni e venne accolto positivamente dalle istituzioni accademiche statunitensi e da diversi esponenti del Relativismo culturale. In seguito subì critiche e tentativi di smentita, in particolare dall'antropologo neozelandese Derek Freeman, il quale accusò l'autrice di essersi fatta ingannare dalle donne del villaggio, realizzando un'opera fallace. Il libro ebbe successo anche in Europa, con numerose edizioni e traduzioni. La prima traduzione in italiano è del 1954. (it)
