- Das Bread and Puppet Theater ist eine US-amerikanische Theatergruppe, die sich der Mittel des Puppentheaters bedient und sich dem Genre des politischen Theaters zurechnen lässt. Herausragendes Merkmal des Kollektivs ist die Verwendung von Masken und von bis zu fünf Meter hohen Großpuppen, die wie Stabfiguren bewegt werden können. Von der Art der künstlerischen Arbeit, den Inhalten der Stücke und dem Bekanntheitsgrad kann das Bread and Puppet Theater mit dem Living Theatre verglichen werden, in dessen Räumlichkeiten es anfangs auftrat. - The Bread and Puppet Theater (often known simply as Bread & Puppet) is a politically radical puppet theater, active since the 1960s, based in Glover, Vermont as of January 2020. The theater was co-founded by Elka and Peter Schumann. Peter is the artistic director. The name Bread & Puppet is derived from the theater's practice of sharing its own fresh bread, served for free with aïoli, with the audience of each performance to create community, and from its central principle art should be as basic as bread to life. Some have heard echoes of the Roman phrase "bread and circuses" or the labor slogan "Bread and Roses" in the theater's name as well, though these are not often mentioned in Bread & Puppet's own explanations of its name. The Bread and Puppet Theater participates in parades including Independence Day celebrations, notably in Cabot, Vermont, with many effigies including a satirical Uncle Sam on stilts. (en)

- The Bread and Puppet Theatre est une compagnie de théâtre et de marionnettes progressiste née en 1962. Fondée par Elka et Peter Schumann, allemand originaire de Silésie installé aux États-Unis en 1961, la compagnie s’inscrit dans le mouvement radical américain, né en même temps que la lutte pour les droits civiques. Elle s’oppose à toute forme de répression, de guerre, d’injustice. D’où son nom générique de théâtre radical. Installé dans le Vermont, d’abord, puis à New York le Bread and Puppet est présent dans divers combats politiques : le mouvement des Black Panthers, les manifestations contre la guerre américaine au Viêt Nam, et plus récemment contre l'administration de George W. Bush, et le mur élevé en Israël sur le territoire palestinien, ce qui a provoqué de vives réactions au sein de la communauté juive américaine. Le Bread and Puppet a inventé des marionnettes géantes (faites le plus souvent de matériau de récupération) qui ont éveillé, lorsqu’on les a découvertes en France, en 1968, nombre de vocations pour les spectacles de rues et les marionnettes géantes. Le nom Bread and Puppet - pain et marionnette - vient de la pratique de la compagnie de partager son propre pain frais avec de l'aïoli aux spectateurs avec chaque représentation, pour créer un esprit de collectivité, dans l'idée que, selon Peter Schuman, l'art « est aussi indispensable à l’humain que le pain ». - Het Bread and Puppet Theater is een Amerikaans poppentheater dat begin jaren zestig van de 20e eeuw werd opgericht door Peter Schumann. De groep heeft een boerderij in (Vermont) als thuisbasis en trad wereldwijd op, waaronder in 1976 in in Brussel en in 1978 tijdens het Holland Festival in Amsterdam. Het theater treedt vooral op in de buitenlucht, als straattheater en in openbare parken. In 1978 werd het onderscheiden met een Erasmusprijs. De groep voert de slogan Cheap Art and Political Theater. Het voerde onder meer actie tegen de Vietnamoorlog, was voor de sluiting van een kerncentrale van General Electric in Vermont en ondersteunde het de Occupybeweging op het terrein van de Harvard-universiteit.
