Bijapur, officially known as Vijayapura, is the district headquarters of Bijapur district of the Karnataka state of India. It is also the headquarters for Bijapur Taluk. Bijapur city is well known for its historical monuments of architectural importance built during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty. It is also well known for the sports by the popular Karnataka premier league team as Bijapur Bulls. Bijapur is located 530 km (330 mi) northwest of the state capital Bangalore and about 550 km (340 mi) from Mumbai and 384 km (239 mi) west of the city of Hyderabad.

  • Bijapur és una ciutat de l'Índia a l'estat de Karnataka, districte de Bijapur, fundada a l'època de la dinastia Chalukya de Kalyani (segle X-XI) amb el nom de Vijayapura o "Ciutat de la Victòria" del que deriva el seu nom actual. La seva població (2001) era de 245.946 habitants (1901: 23.811 habitants). Les llengües principals són el kannada i l'anglès. Fou conquerida al final del segle XIII per Ala al-Din Khaldji de Delhi i a la meitat del segle xiv (el 1347) va passar al reis bahmànides de Bidar. El soldà bahmànida Muhammad III, va nomenar el 1481 a Yusuf Adil Khan com a governador; Yusuf era suposat fill del soldà otomà Mahmud II, i havia fugit a l'Índia a la mort del seu pare per escapar a la matança dels prínceps en la lluita per la successió, i fou comprat com esclau per Mahmud Gawan, el visir o ministre principal de Muhammad III. Aurangzeb va morir el 2 de març del 1707 i poc després Kam es va proclamar emperador a Bijapur amb el títol de Din-panah, però el seu regnat fou efímer. The Bijapur city has been declared as one of the corporations in the state of Karnataka in 2013. Bijapur urban population as per 2011 census is 326,000, perhaps the 9th biggest city in Karnataka. Vijayapura Mahanagara Palike (VMP) is the newest Municipal Corporation formed under the KMC act along with Shimoga and Tumkur Municipal Corporations. Administratively, Bijapur district comes under Belgaum division along with Bagalkote, Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttara Kannada (Karwar) districts. The civic administration of the city is managed by the Bijapur City Corporation and office of Deputy Commissioner in Bijapur. The office of Deputy Commissioner has the responsibility of rural areas in Bijapur, while the corporation administrates the city of Bijapur.
