- Balanta, vor allem im französischen Sprachraum auch Balante, sind eine Ethnie mit einer gleichnamigen atlantischen Sprache in Westafrika in den Ländern Senegal, Gambia und Guinea-Bissau. - The Balanta (Guinea-Bissau Creole and Portuguese: balanta; French: balante; lit. “those who resist” in Mandinka) are an ethnic group found in Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Senegal, Cape Verde and The Gambia. They are the largest ethnic group of Guinea-Bissau, representing more than one-quarter of the population. Despite their numbers, they have remained outside the colonial and postcolonial state because of their social organisation. The Balanta can be divided into six clans: Nhacra, Ganja (Mane), Naga, Patch, Sofa and Kentohe. The largest of which are the Balanta Kentohe. Archaeologists believe that the people who became the Balanta migrated to present-day Guinea-Bissau in small groups between the 10th and 14th centuries CE. During the 19th century, they spread throughout the area that is now Guinea-Bissau and southern Senegal in order to resist the expansion of the Kaabu kingdom. Today, the Balanta are found in the modern-day countries of Senegal, Cape Verde and Gambia but mostly reside in the southern and central regions of Guinea-Bissau. (en)

- Os balantas (palavra que significa literalmente "aqueles que resistem") são um grupo étnico nigero-congolês dividido entre a Guiné-Bissau, o Senegal e a Gâmbia. São o maior grupo étnico da Guiné-Bissau, representando mais de 25% da população total do país. No entanto, mantiveram-se sempre fora do estado colonial e pós-colonial, devido à sua organização social. Os balantas podem ser divididos em seis subgrupos: balantas bravos, balantas cunantes, balantas de dentro, balantas de fora, balantas manés e balantas nagas. Os arqueólogos crêem que o povo que viria a ser os balantas migrou para a atual Guiné-Bissau em grupos pequenos entre os séculos X e XIV d.C. Durante o século XIX, espalharam-se ao longo da área do mesmo país e do sul do Senegal, de forma a resistirem à expansão do reino de Gabu. A tradição oral entre os balantas diz que estes migraram para oeste desde a área onde são hoje o Egito, Sudão e Etiópia para escapar à seca e às guerras. Hoje, os balantas encontram-se principalmente nas regiões sul e centro da Guiné-Bissau. São maioritariamente agricultores e criadores de gado, principalmente porcos.
