It is responsible for the upkeep of over 234 alpine huts in Austria and neighbouring countries. It also maintains over 26,000 kilometres of footpaths, and produces detailed maps of key mountain areas within Austria. Much of this work is done by the association's 22,000 volunteers. The association has a museum in Innsbruck dedicated to the history of alpinism. It also has sections in Belgium and the United Kingdom, and a group in Poland. (en)

Il s'agit de la plus grande organisation d'alpinisme en Autriche. Elle est responsable de la gestion et de l'entretien de quelques 234 refuges de montagne en Autriche et dans les pays environnants. Elle entretient 26 000 kilomètres de sentiers et publie des cartes détaillées des régions montagneuses en Autriche. Une grande partie de ce travail est réalisée par les 22 000 volontaires de l'association. En 1871, Guido von List devient le secrétaire de l'association. L'association gère un musée à Innsbruck consacré à l'histoire de l'alpinisme. (fr)

Utrzymuje ponad 700 schronisk, zajmuje się znakowaniem szlaków i wydawaniem map. Jest członkiem UIAA. Swoim członkom oferuje również ubezpieczenie górskie obejmujące cały świat. W ramach ÖAV działają sekcje wspinaczki sportowej, organizowane są szkolenia i wyprawy, również w góry wysokie. Założony został w 1862 w Wiedniu jako pierwsza tego typu organizacja w kontynentalnej Europie, a druga na świecie po brytyjskiej (założonym w 1857). W latach 1873–1938 połączył się z organizacją niemiecką (Deutscher Alpenverein), tworząc Deutscher und Oesterreichischer Alpenverein (DuOEAV), skupiającą Niemców z Austro-Węgier (również czeskich Niemców) i Cesarstwa Niemieckiego. Po anschlussie Austrii usunięto przymiotnik „austriacki” i nazwa związku ogólnoniemieckiego brzmiała Deutscher Alpenverein (DAV). Po II wojnie światowej Austriacy reaktywowali osobną organizację pod pierwotną nazwą. Wrocławska sekcja DuOEAV w roku 1882 wybudowała u podnóża Wildspitze schronisko Breslauer Hütte. Alpenverein miało również sekcje na terenie niepodległej Polski – m.in. w Katowicach, a podczas II wojny światowej sekcja krakowska (Zweig Krakau des Deutschen Alpenvereins) administrowała schroniskiem na Markowych Szczawinach.
