- Apollo is an optical submarine communications cable system crossing the Atlantic Ocean, owned by Apollo Submarine Cable System Ltd (a joint venture between Cable & Wireless Worldwide and Alcatel). It consists of 2 segments North and South, creating two fully diverse transatlantic paths. In early 2006, Level 3 Communications announced its purchase of 300 Gbit/s of capacity between Apollo North and Apollo South with an option to purchase up 300 Gbit/s of future capacity. This acquisition gives Level 3 a transatlantic path that does not pass through either London or New York City, which is desirable to carriers due to network diversity concerns. This purchase represents the single largest transaction of sub-sea capacity in history without laying new cable. (en)

Eigentümer und Betreiber ist das Unternehmen Apollo Submarine Cable System Ltd. mit Sitz in London, eine Tochtergesellschaft des Telekommunikationskonzerns Vodafone. Die Verbindung wird hauptsächlich für Datenübertragungen für das Internet verwendet. Apollo war ursprünglich ein Joint Venture zwischen dem Netzbetreiber Cable & Wireless (60 %) und dem technischen Ausrüster Alcatel (40 %). Nach der Übernahme von Cable & Wireless durch Vodafone befindet sich Apollo nun vollständig im Besitz von Vodafone. Das System im DWDM-Multiplexverfahren besteht aus zwei Lichtwellenleiter-Trassen (Nord und Süd) mit jeweils rund 6.500 Kilometer Länge. Die Gesamtkapazität mit je vier Faserpaaren pro Trasse war ursprünglich für einen Datendurchsatz von 3,2 Terabit pro Sekunde ausgelegt. Durch weiter optimierte Multiplexverfahren können mittlerweile 8 Terabit pro Sekunde über ein Faserpaar übertragen werden. Apollo bestaat uit twee onderzeekabels, die evenwijdig tussen Europa en de Verenigde Staten liggen, Apollo Noord en Apollo Zuid. Er is in feite sprake van een langgerekte ring. De lengte van het systeem bedraagt 12.315 kilometer. Apollo maakt gebruik van golflengtemultiplexing. De maximale capaciteit bedraagt 3,2 terabit per seconde. Apollo wordt vooral, maar niet uitsluitend, voor internet gebruikt. Level 3 Communications maakte in begin 2006 zijn bekend aankoop 300 Gigabit per seconde tussen Apollo Noord en Apollo Zuid te hebben gekocht met de optie om in de toekomst nog eens 300 Gigabit te kopen. Deze aankoop geeft Level 3 de mogelijkheid gegevens over de Atlantische Oceaan te versturen, zonder dat de verbinding door Londen of New York gaat. Deze aankoop was de grootste transactie van onderzeese capaciteit in de geschiedenis zonder dat daarbij nieuwe kabels werden aangelegd. Apollo komt op vier plaatsen aan land: 1.
