The system of racial segregation and oppression in South Africa known as apartheid was implemented and enforced by many acts and other laws. This legislation served to institutionalize racial discrimination and the dominance by white people over people of other races. While the bulk of this legislation was enacted after the election of the National Party government in 1948, it was preceded by discriminatory legislation enacted under earlier British and Afrikaner governments. Apartheid is distinguished from segregation in other countries by the systematic way in which it was formalized in law.

  • El apartheid, que significa "separación" en afrikáans, fue un sistema social impuesto por los gobiernos de minoría blanca en Sudáfrica durante el siglo XX. Bajo este sistema los grupos étnicos estaban separados, y a la mayoría no blanca se le negaban numerosos derechos, como el de votar y el de libre circulación por el territorio nacional. El propósito del apartheid era no sólo apartar a los habitantes que no eran blancos de los blancos, sino, además, a los distintos grupos de no blancos entre sí, es decir, hacer extensiva la segregación también a las otras etnias que poblaban la región. Aparte de los nativos africanos, había grupos de origen mixto y asiático, estos últimos principalmente de ascendencia india y malaya.
