- "Absolute Beginners" is a song written and recorded by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. Released on 3 March 1986, it was the theme song to the 1986 film of the same name (itself an adaptation of the book Absolute Beginners). Although the film was not a commercial success, the song was a big hit, reaching No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached the top ten on the main singles charts in ten other countries. In the US, it peaked at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bowie performed "Absolute Beginners" live on his 1987 Glass Spider Tour, his 2000 "Mini" Tour, and his 2002 Heathen Tour. The song has been included on a number of Bowie's compilation and "Best-of" releases, and was included as a bonus track on the 1995 re-release of Tonight (1984). (en)

Questa versione full length è la stessa presente nella colonna sonora del film ed è una delle tracce bonus della riedizione del 1995 dell'album Tonight. Bowie, amico del regista del film, Julien Temple (con il quale aveva collaborato nel 1984 per il videoclip Jazzin' for Blue Jean), accettò di recitare nella pellicola e di comporre inoltre la "theme song" del film. Le sessioni di registrazione ebbero luogo agli Abbey Road Studios di Londra, con la partecipazione di un gruppo di session men. L'incisione venne completata celermente, ma la pubblicazione della canzone venne rimandata a causa di ritardi nella lavorazione del film. La Virgin voleva pubblicare il brano su singolo in concomitanza con l'uscita nei cinema della pellicola. Poco tempo dopo il completamento di Absolute Beginners, Mick Jagger volò a Londra per incidere insieme a Bowie Dancing in the Street, che fece uso di molti dei musicisti impiegati nella sessione precedente. Il brano risente dell'influenza dello stile doo-wop anni cinquanta al quale Bowie era interessato negli anni ottanta.
