- The 1996–97 European Challenge Cup (also called the 1996–97 European Shield) was the inaugural year of the European Challenge Cup, the second tier rugby union cup competition below the Heineken Cup. The tournament was held between October 1996 and January 1997 and was won by Bourgoin with an 18–9 victory over Castres in the final at the Stade de la Méditerranée in Béziers, France. Twenty-four teams took part from England, France, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Scotland and Wales, divided into four groups of six. Each team played the other teams in the group once, meaning each had five matches with either two or three on their home ground. The quarter–finals saw seven of the eight clubs coming from France, with the only non-French club being Northampton Saints. (en)

- La Conférence européenne est une compétition européenne annuelle de rugby à XV. C'est la deuxième compétition européenne interclubs de rugby à XV en importance, derrière la Coupe d'Europe de rugby à XV dite H Cup pour des raisons de sponsoring. La Conférence européenne 1996-1997 est la première édition de cette compétition. Elle réunit 24 clubs, franchises ou provinces européens : sept français, sept gallois, six anglais, un italien, un irlandais, un écossais et un roumain. La compétition se déroule du 12 octobre 1996 au 26 janvier 1997, date de la finale au stade de la Méditerranée à Béziers. La compétition est organisée en deux phases. Une phase de poule se déroule sur un match unique à la fin de laquelle sont qualifiées les deux deux premières équipes de chaque groupe. Elle se poursuit par une phase à élimination directe à partir des quarts de finale sur le terrain du club le mieux classé. Les sept clubs français se qualifient pour les quarts de finale de cette compétition, les Anglais des Northampton Saints complétant le tableau. À la suite de la défaite de l'équipe anglaise en quart, le dernier carré est donc entièrement français. Ces quarts de finale sont par ailleurs très disputés, car trois d'entre eux ont vu des victoires inférieures ou égales à cinq points d'écart, ce qui tranche avec les demi-finales (17 et 23 points d'écart). Le CSBJ dispose du Castres olympique 18 à 9 dans une finale opposant deux équipes invaincues et devient le premier vainqueur de cette compétition. (fr)
