- The 1981 NHL Entry Draft was the 19th NHL Entry Draft. It was held at the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Quebec. The National Hockey League (NHL) teams selected 211 players eligible for entry into professional ranks, in the reverse order of the 1980–81 NHL season and playoff standings. This is the list of those players selected. The last active player in the NHL from this draft class was Chris Chelios, who retired after the 2009–10 season. (en)

Auflage des NHL Entry Draft wählten die Teams der National Hockey League (NHL) in elf Runden insgesamt 211 Spieler aus. Als First Overall Draft Pick wurde der kanadische Center Dale Hawerchuk von den Winnipeg Jets berücksichtigt. Auf den Positionen zwei und drei folgten Doug Smith für die Los Angeles Kings und Bobby Carpenter für die Washington Capitals. Die Reihenfolge des Drafts ergab sich aus der umgekehrten Abschlusstabelle der abgelaufenen Spielzeit 1980/81. Der Entry Draft 1981 war von einer gegenüber dem Vorjahr deutlich erhöhten Anzahl von Spielern aus Europa geprägt, darunter nach 1978 mit Dieter Hegen und Uli Hiemer auch wieder zwei Deutsche. Zudem wurden deutlich mehr Akteure aus den unteren kanadischen Juniorenligen und dem High-School-Bereich berücksichtigt, während die Verpflichtungen aus dem College-Bereich um knapp die Hälfte zurückgingen. Unterdessen wurde Grant Fuhr zum ersten in der ersten Runde gewählten schwarzen Spieler der NHL-Historie, der später ebenso in die Hockey Hall of Fame gewählt werden sollte wie Dale Hawerchuk, Ron Francis, Al MacInnis und Chris Chelios. Weitere namhafte Akteure dieses Jahrgangs sind James Patrick, Tony Tanti, Mike Vernon, John Vanbiesbrouck, Bruce Driver und Gaétan Duchesne. (de)

Il terzo NHL Entry Draft si svolse nuovamente presso il Forum de Montréal, sede delle gare casalinghe dei Montreal Canadiens. Rispetto alle edizioni passate nel 1981 si misero in mostra i portieri e i giocatori europei. I portieri scelti furono 25, uno in meno rispetto al record delle edizioni 1975 e 1976, guidati dall'ottava scelta assoluta degli Edmonton Oilers Grant Fuhr, primo giocatore afroamericano ad essere scelto al primo giro. I giocatori provenienti dal vecchio continente furono 32, stabilendo il nuovo primato dopo i 17 giocatori scelti nel 1978. I Buffalo Sabres scelsero al numero 17 il cecoslovacco , tuttavia la federazione non consentì al giocatore di varcare la cortina di ferro. Dudáček rimase comunque il primo ceco nella storia scelto al primo giro. A Winnipeg fu data un'ulteriore scelta, l'unica dell'undicesimo giro, come compensazione per il trasferimento dalla Smythe alla Norris Division. I Winnipeg Jets selezionarono il centro Dale Hawerchuk dai Cornwall Royals, i Los Angeles Kings invece come seconda scelta puntarono sul centro , proveniente dagli Ottawa 67's, mentre i Washington Capitals scelsero in terza posizione il centro della St. John's School. Fra i 211 giocatori selezionati 119 erano attaccanti, 67 erano difensori mentre 25 erano portieri. Dei giocatori scelti 114 giocarono in NHL, 17 vinsero la Stanley Cup mentre 5 entrarono a far parte della Hockey Hall of Fame. (it)
