Descritto dal collega Robyn Hitchcock come "il Kate Bush maschio", e dalla rivista musicale francese Les Inrockuptibles "il Lord Byron del rock", Roland è stato riconosciuto da dei come un precursore della sottocultura steampunk. Negli anni, Paul Roland ha realizzato ben diciassette album in studio, uno dal vivo e svariati singoli, fra cui il più celebre è probabilmente Gabrielle, del 1987.
