- Στην ελληνική μυθολογία με το όνομα Ξάνθος είναι γνωστά τα παρακάτω δύο διαφορετικά πρόσωπα:
* Ο τελευταίος βασιλιάς των Θηβών, τον οποίο σκότωσε ο Μέλανθος, πατέρας του Κόδρου, σε μονομαχία. Έζησε γύρω στο 1100 π.Χ. Προσπαθώντας να λύσει τις μεθοριακές διαφορές μεταξύ Αθηναίων και Θηβαίων στα σύνορα της Βοιωτίας, πρότεινε για να αποφύγουν τον πόλεμο και να μη χυθεί πολύ αίμα, να μονομαχήσουν οι δύο βασιλιάδες. Ο τότε βασιλιάς της Αθηνας Θυμοίτης, γιος του Οξύντου, θεώρησε σκόπιμο να μη μονομαχήσει ο ίδιος και στη θέση του μονομάχησε ο Μέλανθος, γιος του Ανδροπόμπου, βασιλιάς της Μεσσηνίας. (Ο Μέλανθος είχε βρεθεί τότε στην Αθήνα μαζί με όλη του την οκογένεια και πολλούς Μεσσηνίους επειδή είχε κατακτηθεί η χώρα τους από τους Δωριείς). Στη μονομαχία ο Μέλανθος σκότωσε τον Ξάνθο και οι Αθηναίοι τον αναγόρευσαν βασιλιά τους Σύμφωνα με άλλη παράδοση τον σκότωσε με δόλιο τρόπο ο Ανδρόπομπος, γιος του Βώρου και πατέρας του Μέλανθου.
* Ο γιος του Ερύμανθου και εγγονός του Αρκάδα. Σύμφωνα με μία μυθολογική εκδοχή είχε μια κόρη την Ψωφίδα, από την οποία πήρε το όνομά της η ομώνυμη πόλη της Αρκαδίας. (el)
