- The Ruin („Die Ruine“) ist ein altenglisches Gedicht, das im 8. Jahrhundert von einem unbekannten Autor verfasst wurde. Es stammt aus dem Codex Exoniensis einer Sammlung von lyrischen Texten und Rätselsprüchen. Es handelt sich bei dem Werk um eine Elegie, in der von einer Stadt berichtet wird, deren Gebäude zu Ruinen verfallen sind. Dabei wird der Blick durch den Autor von dem gegenwärtigen Zustand des Zerfalls zurück in jene Zeit gelenkt, da sie wegen ihrer Schönheit und ihres Reichtums gerühmt wurde. (de)
- The Ruin ou Ruin (« La Ruine ») est un poème en vieil anglais. C'est une œuvre anonyme, comme la majeure partie de la poésie anglo-saxonne. Il est long de 49 vers environ, mais son unique copie connue, qui figure dans Livre d'Exeter, est très parcellaire, le codex ayant été endommagé par le feu. Le poème est une description élégiaque de bâtiments en ruine, qui rappelle leur gloire à l'époque où ils tenaient encore debout et déplore leur situation actuelle. La scène de fastes que le narrateur imagine lorsqu'il contemple les lieux à l'abandon est tout à fait typique de la culture anglo-saxonne et comparable avec des scènes tirées d'autres élégies vieil-anglaises comme The Wanderer ou The Seafarer, tous deux également conservés dans le Livre d'Exeter. De nombreux chercheurs ont tenté d'identifier la ville décrite par le poème. Le fait que les bâtiments soient en pierre suggère qu'il est question de constructions datant de la période romaine, et la mention de thermes aux vers 38-46 rappelle nécessairement Aquae Sulis, l'actuelle ville de Bath. Néanmoins, le poète a très bien pu s'inspirer d'une autre cité, ou même de plusieurs. L'identification avec la Babylone de l'Apocalypse biblique ne semble pas appropriée dans la mesure où le poème se contente de déplorer l'état de la cité en ruines, sans avancer de cause morale à sa chute. Het is bewaard gebleven in het laat-10e-eeuwse Exeter Book. Het gedicht telt 35 regels, maar is door beschadiging niet geheel compleet. The Ruin ademt een melancholieke sfeer. Het beschrijft het verval van een eens trots gebouw of een stad, mogelijk van Romeinse makelij. De vermelding in het gedicht van baden doet vermoeden dat het gaat om de oude stad Bath, hoewel een duidelijke identificatie niet mogelijk is. (nl)
- The Ruin ("La rovina") è un poema in antico inglese dell'VIII secolo, anonimo, tratto dal Libro di Exeter, ovvero un'ampia raccolta di epoca anglosassone contenente varie poesie e indovinelli: dalla medesima raccolta provengono anche le poche altre poesie in antico inglese a noi note, come ad esempio The Wanderer, The Seafarer e Il lamento di Deor. Si tratta di una poesia a carattere elegiaco in cui il narratore contempla i resti di una grande città, costruita forse dai Giganti ma ormai in rovina, e ne piange la decadenza ricordando lo splendore del passato: "[…] I costruttori e i loro Imperi- decaduti, distrutti, morti. Sono crollate anche le mura. Là sorgevano un tempo case luminose, terme, con sale immense, dove la gioia dell'uomo risuonava come in un salone delle feste. Là, un tempo, si ergevano uomini fieri, ubriachi di vino, nelle loro armature, e guardavano i loro tesori, l'argento, le pietre preziose, qualche perla pregiata.
