- Mesèmbria (Mesembria, Μεσημβρία) fou una important ciutat grega de la costa de Tràcia a l'Euxí al peu de les muntanyes Hemos (Haemus) prop de la Mèsia. Fou colònia de Mègara segons Estrabó i el seu nom original fou Menèbria (Μενεβρὶα) del seu fundador Menas; Esteve de Bizanci diu que el seu nom original era Melsèmbria (Μελσημβρία) del seu fundador Melsas; els dos diuen que l'acabament bria era el substantiu traci per 'ciutat'. Flavi Arrià, autor del Periple del Pont Euxí diu que fou fundada pels calcedoni al temps de l'expedició de Darios II a Escítia, però Heròdot diu que la van fundar una mica després, una vegada dominada la Revolta Jònica (vers 494 aC) els calcedonis fugitius; és possible que simplement l'antiga colònia fóra refundada. Mesèmbria va formar una Pentàpolis grega a l'Euxí amb altres ciutats: Odessos, Tomi, Istriani i Apol·loniates. No fou teatre de cap fet especialment destacat a la seva història antiga. El 71 aC va passar a Roma com a i va romandre en poder de romans i romans d'Orient fins al 812 quan fou ocupada pels búlgars, que l'hagueren de retornar el 864, però la van recuperar poc anys després. El 1366 fou ocupada pels croats dirigits per Amadeu VI de Savoia i restituïda als romans d'Orient. El 1453 va caure en mans dels otomans i va començar a decaure. El nom eslau Nessèbar es va imposar i es va confirmar quan el 1878 Bulgària va passar a formar part del principat autònom de la Rumèlia Oriental i el 1886 es va unir a Bulgària. Llavors era un petit poble de pescadors, però sota el règim socialista de Bulgària (1946-1989) es va recuperar i va adquirir importància com a centre residencial de platja.(Vegeu també: Liuba Ognènova-Marínova)

No debe confundirse con otra antigua ciudad de su mismo nombre que estaba situada también en Tracia pero en la costa del Mar Egeo. Fue colonia de Megara según Estrabón y su nombre original fue Menebria (Μενεβρὶα) de su fundador Menas. Esteban de Bizancio dice que su nombre original fue Melsembria (Μελσημβρία) de su fundador Melsas; los dos dicen que el sufijo "bria" era el nombre tracio para ciudad. El autor anónimo del Periplo del Ponto Euxino dice que fue fundada por los calcedonios al tiempo de la expedición de Darío I a Escitia, mientras Heródoto dice que una vez dominada la revuelta jónica (hacia 493 a. C.) se establecieron en Mesembria los bizantinos y los calcedonios fugitivos. Mesembria formó una Pentápolis griega en el Euxino con otras ciudades: Odesos, Tomis, Istros y Apolonia del Ponto Euxino. Por otra parte, los mesembrinos habrían fundado una pequeña colonia llamada . No fue teatro de ningún hecho especialmente destacado en su historia antigua. En 71 a. C. pasó a Roma como ciudad libre y permaneció en poder de romanos y bizantinos hasta el 812 cuando fue ocupada por los búlgaros, que la devolvieron en el 864, pero que la recuperaron pocos años después. En 1366 fue ocupada por los croatas dirigidos por Amadeo VI de Saboya y restituida a Bizancio. En 1453 cayó en manos de los otomanos y comenzó a decaer. El nombre eslavo Nesebar se impuso y se confirmó cuando en 1878 Bulgaria pasó a formar parte del principado autónomo de Rumelia Oriental y en 1886 se unió a Bulgaria. - Mesembria (Ancient Greek: Μεσημβρία; Doric Greek: Μεσαμβρία, romanized: Mesambria) was an important Greek city in ancient Thrace. It was situated on the coast of the Euxine and at the foot of Mount Haemus; consequently upon the confines of Moesia, in which it is placed by Ptolemy. Strabo relates that it was a colony of Dorians from Megara, and that it was originally called Menebria (Μενεβρία) after its founder Menas; Stephanus of Byzantium says that its original name was Melsembria (Μελσημβρία), from its founder Melsas; and both writers state that the termination -bria was the Thracian word for town. According to the Anonymous Periplus of the Euxine Sea, Mesembria was founded by Chalcedonians at the time of the expedition of Darius against Scythia; but according to Herodotus it was founded a little later, after the suppression of the Ionic Revolt, by fugitives from Byzantium and Chalcedon. These statements may, however, be reconciled by supposing that the Thracian town was originally colonized by Megarians, and afterwards received additional colonists from Byzantium and Chalcedon. Mesembria was one of the cities, forming the Greek Pentapolis on the Euxine, the other four being Odessus, Tomi, Istriani and Apolloniatae. Mesembria is rarely mentioned in history, but it continued to exist till a late period, being recorded by Pomponius Mela, Pliny the Elder, and Ptolemy, and appearing in the Peutinger Table. The Dorian colonisation is dated to the beginning of the 6th century BCE, and evidence shows that it was an important trading centre from then on and a rival of Apollonia (Sozopol). It remained the only Dorian colony along the Black Sea coast, as the rest were typical Ionian colonies. At 425/4 BCE the town joined the Delian League, under the leadership of Athens. (en)
