Genial (Latin Genialis or Genealis) was the Duke of Gascony (Vasconia) in the early seventh century. He is mentioned in the Chronicle of Fredegar. Genial was probably a Frank or a Gallo-Roman when Theuderic II and Theudebert II appointed him dux over the Basques (Vascones) of southwestern Aquitaine: Theudebert and Theuderic sent an army against the Wascones and with God's help defeated them, subjected them to their overlordship, and made them pay tribute. They appointed a duke named Genialis, who ruled them well.

El rei va nomenar com a dux de Wasconia a Genial, que governaria sobre els vascons i gal·loromans de la Novempopulania. Sembla que aquest Genial va aconseguir governar en pau segons diu Fredegari a la "Crònica General" i va acabar sent ben acceptat pels vascons. Genial, sobre cuyo origen franco, galorromano o tribal discrepan los autores, fue investido por los caudillos merovingios de Austrasia Teodeberto II y Teodorico II tras consolidar el dominio de Novempopulania y expediciones militares en contra de los vascones. - Genialis, Genial ou Genealis est le premier duc de Vasconie imposé en 602 par les rois francs mérovingiens qui tentent de soumettre à leur autorité les Vascons et les populations locales de mêmes affinités ethniques et linguistiques que sont les Aquitains. Avec cette nomination au début du VIIe siècle, c'est aussi la création du duché de Vasconie. Genial est attesté dans la Chronique de Frédégaire. (fr)

Some scholars believe Genial was more of a tribal leader over whom the Frankish sovereigns exercised a vague suzerainty than a Frankish court official sent to the outskirts of the realm to lord it over a subject people. Sometime around 612, Sisebut, king of the Visigoths, reconquered the trans-Pyrenean portion of his realm, diminishing Frankish suzerainty in Vasconia. Genial was succeeded by Aeghyna. (en)
