General Johan Velde van der Merwe SSAS SOE (25 August 1936 – 27 August 2022) was a South African police officer. He held senior positions in the Security Branch and was Commissioner of the South African Police from 1990 to 1995. He was implicated in the use of death squads, torture, and other human rights abuses as part of the apartheid government's crackdown on the then opposition.
