Namensvorgänger waren zwei Kleine Kreuzer der Kaiserlichen Marine aus den Jahren 1909 und 1916, der Leichte Kreuzer Köln der Reichs- und späteren Kriegsmarine und die Fregatte Köln (F 220) der Bundesmarine. She was the fifth ship of the class, and the fifth ship to serve with one of the navies of Germany to be named after the city of Cologne, in North Rhine-Westphalia.
