Cette rencontre internationale de gymnastique sans classement se déroule tous les quatre ans dans une autre ville. Plusieurs groupes de presque tous les pays du monde représentent leur pays originalement. Concrètement, chaque groupe présente un spectacle gymnique en musique d'environ 15 minutes. Les groupes se succèdent toute la journée sur plusieurs scènes simultanément. La Gymnaestrada existe depuis 1953, dont l'édition s'est réalisée à Rotterdam (Pays-Bas). Il s’agit, en nombre de participants, du premier évènement sportif mondial avant les Jeux olympiques d'été (en moyenne, plus de 20 000 participants). Les athlètes se rencontrent et partagent des coutumes, des habitudes pendant la semaine de la Gymnaestrada. La 13e édition, à Dornbirn, a compté plus de 20 000 participants de 57 pays de tous les continents. La Gymnaestrada mondiale, l'événement culturel de la FIG, est l'une des manifestations sportives les plus importantes au niveau mondial. Elle développe et cultive l'échange multiculturel, la tolérance, le bien-être individuel à travers les valeurs contenues dans la gymnastique. - The World Gymnaestrada is the largest general gymnastics exhibition. It is held every four years much like the Olympics. But the focus of this event is not on winning medals. The Gymnaestrada is about Group Performances – some with hundreds or even thousands of participants. Adults and children of every age and description perform. Countries from around the world come together to showcase their talent and the culture of their various countries. The choreography is designed both to challenge the participants and to delight audiences. Routines are performed at various venues within the host country. Large group routines are known as "mass routines" which involve hundreds of gymnasts. The mass routines are often performed in large stadiums where spectators can take in routines performed by gymnasts from all over the world. The World Gymnaestrada is the successor to the two that were held in Stockholm in 1939 (100 years after Pehr Henrik Ling's death) and 1949. The name Gymnaestrada is formed from the words gymnastik (international name for all sports relating to gymnastics), estrada (stage) and strada (street). It is believed to have been invented by J H Sommer, chairman of the Royal Dutch Gymnastics Federation and Mrs J. v.d.Most-Leyerweert, member of the board of DGF. They submitted their request for an international meet at the 1951 FIG conference. Zurcaroh from season 13 of America's Got Talent represented Austria at WG in Helsinki. (en)

- De Wereld Gymnaestrada is een internationaal gymnastiekevenement dat net als de Olympische Spelen elke vier jaar georganiseerd wordt in een ander land. Dit zes dagen durende festival werd voor het eerst georganiseerd in 1953 in Nederland en is sindsdien alleen maar uitgebreid. De Wereld Gymnaestrada bestaat louter en alleen maar uit demonstraties, zonder wedstrijdelement. Dit maakt de Wereld Gymnaestrada tot een uniek sportevenement. Er zijn verschillende disciplines te zien, onder andere rope skipping, rhönrad, trampolinespringen, dans, acrogym, aerobics, gymnastiek en Groepsspringen. Het doel van de Wereld Gymnaestrada is om mensen met eenzelfde passie uit heel de wereld bijeen te brengen. Wat begon met 14 verschillende landen en ongeveer 5000 deelnemers, groeide uit tot een festiviteit met 55 verschillende landen en 21 000 deelnemers. (nl)

Seu surgimento deu-se em decorrência do desejo do presidente da entidade (FIG) em ver apresentações focadas apenas nos benefícios das modalidades. Idealizada, a primeira Gymnaestrata - denominada Festival Internacional - teve sua primeira edição realizada em 1953 e contou com treze sequências. Por definição, este é o festival internacional mais importante da ginástica geral, bem como o evento oficial da Federação Internacional de Ginástica para esta modalidade, no qual vários países se encontram a cada quatro anos para realizar apresentações, trocar informações sobre os trabalhos desenvolvidos em seus países e discutir a modalidade não competitiva como importante elemento para o aprimoramento humano.
