- Whitlockit ist ein selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der „Phosphate, Arsenate und Vanadate“. Es kristallisiert im trigonalen Kristallsystem mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung Ca9(Mg,Fe)[PO3OH|(PO4)6] und entwickelt meist tafelige oder rhomboedrische Kristalle, aber auch körnige Mineral-Aggregate und mikrokristalline Krusten. Auch die Bildung von Höhlenperlen ist möglich. Sichtbare Kristallflächen weisen einen glas- oder harzähnlichen Glanz auf, krustige Ausbildungen sind dagegen eher matt. Reiner Whitlockit ist farblos und durchsichtig. Er kann allerdings durch vielfache Lichtbrechung aufgrund multikristalliner Ausbildung oder Gitterbaufehlern weiß erscheinen und durch Fremdbeimengungen eine graue oder gelbliche Farbe annehmen, wobei die Transparenz entsprechend abnimmt. Die Strichfarbe ist jedoch immer weiß. Mit einer Mohshärte von 5 gehört Whitlockit zu den mittelharten Mineralen, die sich ähnlich wie das Referenzmineral Apatit mit dem Messer noch ritzen lassen. C'est un minéral relativement rare, que l'on trouve dans les pegmatites granitiques, les gisements de phosphate, les grottes de guano et dans les météorites chondritiques. Il a été décrit pour la première fois en 1941 et nommé d'après Herbert Percy Whitlock, un minéralogiste américain. En parodontie, la whitlockite magnésienne constitue l'un des composants du contenu inorganique du tartre. On en trouve principalement dans le tartre sous-gingival. On en trouve également plus dans les régions postérieures que dans les régions antérieures de la cavité buccale. (fr)

It is a relatively rare mineral but is found in granitic pegmatites, phosphate rock deposits, guano caves and in chondrite meteorites. It was first described in 1941 and named for (1868–1948), American mineralogist and curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. With regards to periodontal dentistry, magnesium whitlockite comprises one component of many of the inorganic content of calculus. It is found primarily in subgingival calculus (as opposed to supragingival calculus). It is also found more in posterior as opposed to anterior regions of the oral cavity. (en)
