Sebbene riunisca fedeli cattolici, non è un gruppo ecclesiale riconosciuto, non ha ricevuto alcuna approvazione canonica. Attualmente Noi Siamo Chiesa e il movimento internazionale We Are Church appoggiano il "nuovo corso" di papa Francesco, che sollecitano ad attuare profonde riforme nella linea indicata dal Concilio Vaticano II. Wir sind Kirche) – międzynarodowy ruch zainicjowany w Rzymie w 1996 jako forma nacisku na hierarchię Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego do odnowy Kościoła na fundamentach II Soboru Watykańskiego i ducha teologicznego jaki się z soboru wyłonił. Dziś hasło „My jesteśmy Kościołem” w Europie jest kojarzone nie tylko z konkretnym ruchem, ale i z szeregiem postaw laikatu katolickiego kontestacyjnych wobec Kościoła hierarchicznego i domagających się jego reformy. Kościoły ewangelickie| „My jesteśmy Kościołem” ma swe początki w „referendum kościelnym” w Austrii z 1995 w sprawie koniecznych zmian w Kościele, które zostało zainicjowane po głośnej aferze pedofilskiej związanej z wiedeńskim kardynałem Hansem Hermannem Groërem. Ruch w Austrii osiągnął sukces i kardynał podał się do dymisji. Pod wezwaniem do zmian w Kościele ruch zebrał 500 tys. podpisów. Organizatorami „referendum kościelnego” byli teologowie, nauczyciele religii, progresywni księża oraz katoliccy intelektualiści. Referendum zyskało poparcie m.in. znanego pisarza i teologa, eks-księdza Adolfa Holla, redaktora naczelnego katolickiego tygodnika „Kircheintern”, ks. Rudolfa Schermanna, a także wielu innych. Organizatorzy przekazali swoje postulaty nowemu przewodniczącemu episkopatu Austrii, biskupowi Grazu, Johannowi Weberowi. Na początku 1996 episkopat odrzucił żądania. Do dziś pod postulatami „referendum kościelnego” podpisało się już 2,5 miliona osób z Austrii, Niemiec i Tyrolu Południowego. „My jesteśmy Kościołem” ma swoje oddziały i przedstawicielstwa w ponad 20 krajach na wszystkich kontynentch i współpracuje z podobnymi organizacjami katolickimi (np. „Catholics for a Free Choice” ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, „Kościół od dołu” z Niemiec, grupa „Golias” z Francji, „Ruch 8 Maja” z Holandii istniejący w latach 1985–2003) (pl)
- Vi är kyrka, på tyska Wir sind Kirche, är en rörelse med ursprung i det tyskspråkiga Europa, som syftar till att förnya Romersk-katolska kyrkan i Andra Vatikankonciliets anda. Teologen Hans Küng har beskrivits som en av rörelsens intellektuella fäder. Wir sind Kirche skapades ur uppropet Kirchenvolks-Begehren (ungefär "Kyrkofolkomröstningen") med krav på reformer, som samlade 505 154 underskrifter i Österrike. Bakgrunden till uppropet var en sexutnyttjandeskandal där , kardinal (1919–2003) anklagades för sexuella övergrepp på tonåringar. Ur rörelsen kring uppropet formades Wir sind Kirche i Österrike 1995. Samma år startades Wir sind Kirche i Schweiz och italienska Sydtyrolen. I realiteten skiljer man inte alltid den inofficiella rörelsen kring uppropet och organisationen åt; Wir sind Kirche kan syfta på båda. Den internationella sammanslutningen av lokala föreningar, International Movement We Are Church (IMWAC), bildades i Rom 1996. Den internationella rörelsen utropade officiellt ett manifest baserat på Kirchenvolks-Begehrens krav i Rom i oktober 1997, 35 år efter Andra vatikankonciliets invigning. Manifestet omfattar bland annat att tillåta kvinnor på alla kyrkans positioner, inklusive prästämbetet, att prästernas celibat görs frivilligt och en positiv sexualsyn där individen kan låta sig vägledas av sitt eget samvete i moralfrågor. IMWAC:s ordförande, Martha Heizer som är en av rörelsens grundare, blev tillsammans med sin make Gert Heizer 2014 exkommunicerad på grund av att de firat nattvard i sitt hem utan närvaro av präst, men har trots detta fått förnyat stöd av rörelsens medlemmar och sitter kvar som ordförande. För Kirchenvolks-Begehren i Österrike och Tyskland fick Wir Sind Kirche 1996 års Herbert Haag-pris. (sv)
