- La Première Nation de l'Île Walpole (en anglais : Walpole Island First Nation) est une Première Nation (au sens de « bande indienne ») dont le territoire se situe dans le sud-ouest de l'Ontario, au Canada, à la frontière entre l'Ontario et le Michigan aux États-Unis. Sa réserve, , est située sur l'île Walpole à l'embouchure de la rivière Sainte-Claire, qui se déverse dans le lac Sainte-Claire, à environ 121 kilomètres par route de Windsor et 124 kilomètres par route de Détroit. La Première Nation de l'Île Walpole est constitué de membres des peuples ojibwé, potéouatami et outaouais et leur réserve indienne est un « territoire non cédé » qu'ils l'appellent Bkejwanong, ce qui signifie « là où les eaux se divisent » en langue ojibwée. En plus de l'île Walpole, la réserve comprend l'île Squirrel, l'île Sainte-Anne, l'île Seaway (à l'exception d'une petite partie américaine), l'île Bassett et l'île Potawatomi. La rivière ou les ruisseaux qui séparent ces îles donnent à la région son autre nom couramment utilisé, Swejwanong qui signifie « plusieurs embranchements d'une rivière ». La réserve est indépendante du comté de Lambton, mais dans la région géographique de celui-ci, et jouxte la municipalité de Chatham-Kent et le canton de St. Clair. De l'autre côté de la rivière Sainte-Claire, à l'ouest, se trouvent les villes américaines d' Algonac, et de Clay Township. L'île de Harsen, également territoire anishinaabe non cédé, se trouve maintenant du côté ouest de la frontière internationale. La frontière a été redessinée au XIXe siècle à la suite de différends entre le Royaume-Uni et les États-Unis ; leurs gouvernements étaient inconscients des intérêts et des droits des peuples autochtones vivant sur ces terres. - Walpole Island is an island and First Nation reserve in southwestern Ontario, Canada, on the border between Ontario and Michigan in the United States. It is located in the mouth of the St. Clair River on Lake St. Clair, about 121 kilometres (75 mi) by road from Windsor, Ontario and 124 kilometres (77 mi) from Detroit, Michigan. It is unceded territory and is inhabited by the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa peoples of the Walpole Island First Nation, who call it Bkejwanong, meaning "where the waters divide" in Anishinaabemowin. In addition to Walpole Island, the reserve includes Squirrel Island, St. Anne Island, Seaway Island (except a small U.S. portion), Bassett Island, and Potawatomi Island. The river or creeks that separate these islands provide the area with its other commonly used name, Swejwanong or "many forks of a river." It is independent of, but within the geographic region of, Lambton County and adjoins the municipality of Chatham-Kent and the township of St. Clair. Across the St. Clair River to the west are the United States towns of Algonac, Michigan, and Clay Township. Harsen's Island, also unceded Anishinaabe territory, is now on the west side of the international border line. The border was redrawn in the 19th century following disputes between the United Kingdom and the United States; their governments were oblivious to the interests and rights of the Indigenous peoples living on and using these lands. As such, the First Nation is now trying to solve their grievances with the Crown with a specific claim. Walpole Island is known as the resting place of Tecumseh, prominent 19th-century leader of the Native American tribe known as the Shawnee. (en)
