- Seit Anfang 2007 erhalten alle in Deutschland neu zugelassenen Schienenfahrzeuge eine zwölfstellige Nummer, die eine Lokomotive in einem EU-weiten Fahrzeugeinstellungsregister eindeutig identifizierbar macht und weitgehend dem UIC-Merkblatt 438-3 Kennzeichnung der Triebfahrzeuge folgt. Eine vollständige Registernummer besteht aus 12 Ziffern. Die ersten zwei Ziffern stellen einen Bauartcode dar, die dritte und vierte kodieren, wie bei den Wagennummern, das Herkunftsland. Die Stellen fünf bis elf sind von dem jeweiligen Land frei definierbar, die zwölfte stellt eine Prüfziffer dar. Darauf folgt ein Länderkürzel und das Kürzel des Fahrzeughalters. Zum Stichtag 1. August 2008 hätten auch sämtliche Bestandsfahrzeuge im Register erfasst und mit ihrer Registernummer versehen sein sollen. Vorhandene betreiberinterne Kennzeichnungen der Fahrzeuge blieben davon unberührt. Es gibt bis heute vereinzelt Fahrzeuge, die im Register noch nachgetragen werden. (de)
- L'identification des marquages UIC pour le matériel moteur est une norme pour identifier les locomotives principalement en Europe. Depuis début 2007 les locomotives ou autres matériels moteurs ont reçu un marquage à 12 chiffres. Ce marquage est régit par l' Organisation intergouvernementale pour les transports internationaux ferroviaires et la Spécification technique d'interopérabilité (STI) de l'Union Européenne, et plus spécifiquement l'Agence de l'Union européenne pour les chemins de fer et sa divison CR OPE TSI (Conventional Rail OPErations Technical Specification for Interoperability). Ce marquage est identifiable non seulement en Europe mais aussi en Asie et en Afrique (voir Liste des codes pays UIC). Un numéro complet est un Numéro Européen de Véhicule et comprends un code à 12 chiffres comme défini dans le Code UIC 438-3, marquage d'identification pour le matériel moteur. Les 2 premiers chiffres sont le code du type, le 3e et 4e pour le pays d'origine (où le train est enregistré), 5 à 11 sont définis par le pays concerné, et le 12e est un chiffre de sécurité basé sur la formule de Luhn. Viennent ensuite l'abréviation du pays d'origine et le propriétaire du véhicule. l'EU CR OPE TSI a imposé au 1er Août 2008 à ce que tous les engins soient enregistrés et marqués du code. - The UIC identification marking for tractive stock is a standard for identifying train stock like locomotives that supply tractive force primarily in Europe. Since the beginning of 2007 locomotives or other traction units in Europe have been given a 12-digit number. Vehicle numbering is now governed by the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail and in Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) of the European Union, specifically the European Railway Agency's CR OPE TSI (Conventional Rail OPErations Technical Specification for Interoperability). This makes the locomotive clearly identifiable within Europe and parts of Asia and northern Africa (see List of UIC country codes). A complete number is referred to as a European Vehicle Number and comprises 12 digits as originally outlined in UIC Code of Practice 438-3, Identification marking for tractive stock. Digits 1–2 are the type code, 3–4 the country of origin (where the vehicle is registered), 5–11 are defined by the country concerned, 12 is the check digit calculated via the Luhn algorithm. It is followed by abbreviations for the country of origin and the owner of the vehicle. The EU CR OPE TSI required that by 1 August 2008 all traction units had to be registered and marked with their number. Existing locomotive numbers used internally were not necessarily affected, but meanwhile in many countries the vehicles got 12-digit numbers. (en)

Dit nummer bevat informatie over het voertuig. Deze codering is voor alle bij de UIC aangesloten spoorwegmaatschappijen gelijk. Aan de hand van de rijtuigcode kan een rangeerder of andere belanghebbende direct zien met welk materieeltype hij te doen heeft. Deze nummers bevinden zich aan beide kanten van de voertuigen. (nl)

Oznaczenie pojazdu nadane zgodnie z jego wytycznymi składa się z 17 znaków, z których 12 jest cyframi. Zasady stosowania oznaczeń UIC w Polsce określa Rozporządzenie Ministra Transportu z dnia 31 maja 2006 r. w sprawie rejestru i oznakowania pojazdów kolejowych .Pierwszymi polskimi pojazdami trakcyjnymi, które oznaczono zgodnie z zasadami międzynarodowymi, były dwa EZT typu 14WE dostarczone Szybkiej Kolei Miejskiej w Warszawie w sierpniu 2007.
