- The Treaty of London (1700) or Second Partition Treaty was the second attempt by Louis XIV of France and William III of England to impose a diplomatic solution to the issues that led to the 1701-1714 War of the Spanish Succession. Both divided the Spanish Empire without prior consultation and since the Spanish viewed an undivided Empire as non-negotiable, historians generally view them as largely unenforceable. Charles II of Spain became the last ruler of Habsburg Spain at the age of five in 1665. He suffered from ill health most of his life and despite marrying twice, by 1698 it was clear he would die without children, leaving the question of his successor unresolved. Although no longer the leading European power, the Empire remained a strong global presence and as the closest heirs were from the Austrian Habsburg and French Bourbon families, acquisition by either would significantly impact the European balance of power. Hoping to avoid another costly conflict like the Nine Years' War, in 1698 William and Louis agreed the Treaty of The Hague (1698), or First Partition Treaty, making Joseph Ferdinand heir to the Spanish throne. It became redundant when he died of smallpox in February 1699 and the Treaty of London replaced him with Archduke Charles, younger son of Emperor Leopold I. It ultimately failed to prevent the outbreak of war in July 1701. (en)

- Il trattato di Londra (chiamato anche secondo trattato di partizione) venne concluso il 25 marzo 1700 tra il Regno d'Inghilterra ed il Regno di Francia. Dopo il fallimento del Primo trattato di partizione del 1698, un nuovo trattato tentò di restaurare la Prammatica Sanzione dopo la morte di Giuseppe Ferdinando di Baviera che era stato designato dal primo trattato come possibile erede per la corona spagnola dopo la morte senza eredi di Carlo II. Sulla base del nuovo trattato, il secondo figlio dell'imperatore Leopoldo I, avrebbe acquisito il trono di Spagna e le colonie oltremare ad eccezione dei domini in Italia, motivo per cui il futuro Carlo VI decise di non aderire al trattato. Dit overlijden had het Verdrag van Den Haag (1698) buiten werking gesteld. Volgens het Verdrag van Den Haag zou Jozef Ferdinand van Beieren de troonopvolger van Karel II van Spanje zijn. De dood van Jozef Ferdinand in februari 1699 maakte het verdrag van oktober 1698 echter ongeldig. Het Tweede Partitieverdrag hield in dat de Spaanse kroon naar aartshertog Karel van Oostenrijk zouden gaan, terwijl de Spaanse bezittingen in Italië aan Frankrijk zouden toevallen. Engeland, Frankrijk en de Verenigde Provincies stemden in met het verdrag. De keizer van het Duitse rijk was tegen omdat hij alle Spaanse bezittingen aan Oostenrijk wilde doen toevallen. De uitvoering van het verdrag zou het uiteenvallen van het Spaanse Rijk betekenen. De koning van Spanje, Karel II, zag er niets in. Hij wees in zijn testament, Filips V van Spanje (de tweede zoon van Lodewijk van Frankrijk, de grote dauphin, op dat moment de aangewezen opvolger van Lodewijk XIV) aan als zijn opvolger.
