- Der Klang der Zeit, Originaltitel: The Time of Our Singing (2003), ist der achte Roman des US-amerikanischen Schriftstellers Richard Powers, der vor allem für seine überzeugende Verknüpfung naturwissenschaftlicher Themen mit psychologischen und philosophischen Implikationen bekannt geworden ist. Die als hervorragend und kongenial gelobte deutsche Übersetzung seines sprachlich sehr komplexen Werks wurde von Manfred Allié und Gabriele Kempf-Allié besorgt, die gemeinsam auch Powers’ drei Jahre später erschienenen Bestseller Das Echo der Erinnerung (The Echo Maker, 2006) ins Deutsche übertrugen. Der Klang der Zeit erzählt eine episch ausgebreitete Familiensaga, insbesondere das Leben von zwei musikalisch äußerst talentierten Brüdern, Söhnen eines deutsch-jüdischen Physikers und dessen schwarzer Ehefrau aus Philadelphia. Den politischen Vordergrund bilden der amerikanische Rassismus und die Bürgerrechtsbewegung. Hauptthema jedoch ist die alle Geschehnisse durchziehende und durchdringende Kraft und Schönheit der Musik und des Gesangs, deren Emotionalität und Perfektion enthusiastisch beschrieben und, trotz aller Tragik, als letztlich triumphierend gefeiert werden. - The Time of Our Singing (2003) is a novel by American writer Richard Powers. It tells the story of two brothers, Jonah and Joseph Strom, involved in music, dealing heavily with issues of prejudice.Their parents, David Strom and Delia Daley, met at Marian Anderson's concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial after she had been barred from any other legitimate concert venue.The story goes back and forth between the generations, describing the unusual coupling of a German-Jewish physicist (David) who has lost his family in the Holocaust and a black woman from Philadelphia (Delia), both of whom have strong musical backgrounds. They impart their love of music to their family. Their two boys go on to study music and become professional musicians: one a singer, the other a pianist. The parent's third child, their daughter Ruth, becomes a militant black activist. This is a complex epic novel juxtaposing historical events throughout most of the 20th century, depicting racism and the development of civil rights efforts and the author's love and knowledge of music and physics. The book can be read on many levels, but those who have at least some familiarity with music will find a plethora of references to music of all eras and styles. An opera was written based on the book by Kris Defoort. The opera premiered in La Monnaie in Brussels in September 2021. (en)

Zowel de oorspronkelijke Engelse titel: The Time of Our Singing als de Nederlandse vertaling van Mieke Lindenburg zijn van 2003. Powers wordt gerekend tot de wetenschappelijk georiënteerde romanschrijvers. Het boek is het verhaal van Jonah en Josef Strom, twee broers, die hun leven wijden aan zang en muziek, respectievelijk als zanger en als pianist. Hun ouders hebben een sterke muzikale achtergrond; Delia Daley, hun moeder, is een zwarte vrouw uit Philadelphia; vader David Strom is een natuurkundige van Duits-joodse afkomst, die in de Holocaust heel zijn familie verloor. Zij willen hun kinderen opvoeden voor een wereld zonder vooroordelen, maar in het Amerika van het derde kwart van de 20e eeuw is dat niet vanzelfsprekend, zo niet onmogelijk. De historische kwestie van de rassensegregatie in Amerika is een steeds weerkerend thema, dat onvermijdelijk leidt tot breuklijnen binnen deze familie, onder andere met de grootouders langs moeders kant, en met hun jongere zusje Ruth. Vader Strom doet onderzoek rond de algemene relativiteitstheorie; het denken over de aard en de zin van de tijd speelt in het boek een niet onbelangrijke rol, zoals nog het best door de Nederlandse titel wordt weergegeven.
