- Les Dépouilles de Poynton (The Spoils of Poynton) est un roman américain de Henry James, paru en 1897. Il s'agit d'un des plus courts romans de l'auteur qui, sans être considéré comme une de ses œuvres majeures, est certainement un de ses récits les plus efficaces. L'âpre récit est celui d'une lutte, racontée selon le point de vue de la jeune Fleda Vetch, entre Mrs. Gereth et son fils Owen pour la conservation d'une grande demeure bourgeoise et des objets d'art qu'elle abrite. Le roman, d'abord publié en feuilleton dans The Atlantic Monthly en 1896 sous le titre The Old Things (Les Vieilles Choses), est repris en volume l'année suivante sous son titre actuel. La traduction française, signée Simone David, ne paraît aux éditions Calmann-Lévy qu'en 1954. (fr)

Mrs. Gereth, a widow of impeccable taste and iron will, formed the collection over decades only to have it torn away from her when her son Owen decides to marry a frivolous woman. The story is largely told from the viewpoint of Fleda Vetch, a keenly intelligent young woman of straitened circumstances who, shortly after becoming the intimate friend and companion of Mrs. Gereth, falls in love with Owen. Sympathetic to Mrs. Gereth's anguish over losing the fine things she patiently collected, Fleda shuttles between the estranged mother and son, becoming ever more involved in their affairs. (en)
