It is a concept album based on the 1986 science fiction novel The Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C. Clarke. The album reached No. 24 on the UK Albums Chart.

Oldfield, který je velkým fanouškem sci-fi, nahrál de facto soundtrack ke knize, neboť děje na albu i v románu jsou shodné. Album je zcela instrumentální a evokuje atmosféru sci-fi. Pro nahrání The Songs of Distant Earth použil Oldfield (na rozdíl od několika předešlých alb) ve velkém množství syntezátory a počítačové smyčky. V úvodní skladbě „In the Beginning“ je použit zvukový záznam z lodi Apollo 8, ve kterém astronaut William Anders předčítá na Vánoce 1968 při oběhu lodi kolem Měsíce Genesis – 1. knihu Mojžíšovu. Krátce po vydání alba na CD a LP byla uvedena na trh nová verze na CD s odlišným přebalem. Ta obsahuje navíc datovou stopu s interaktivní aplikací a několika videosekvencemi. (cs)

Siendo fiel a su estilo Oldfield realizó todo el álbum en su estudio de grabación de Inglaterra, en el que compuso cada uno de los 17 cortes que forman el disco. Como curiosidad, Oldfield hizo que cada uno de los temas musicales se enlazasen con el siguiente de forma consecutiva (a diferencia del resto de álbumes, que dejan varios segundos de silencio entre tema y tema), lo que convierte el álbum en una rareza en cuanto a diseño y contenido, y lo transforma en toda una odisea musical.
