It was produced by Michael Myerberg and directed by Elia Kazan with costumes by Mary Percy Schenck. The play is a three-part allegory about the life of mankind, centering on the Antrobus family of the fictional town of Excelsior, New Jersey. The epic comedy-drama is noted as among the most heterodox of classic American comedies — it broke nearly every established theatrical convention. Narra la vicenda di una famiglia americana che ironizza, con tutti i suoi alti e bassi, sull'intera specie umana (questo è quanto viene anche suggerito dal nome, Antrobus oppure, meno spesso, Antropus). Nel corso delle varie epoche, la famiglia è costretta continuamente a sottrarsi alle calamità storiche e naturali. Il lavoro teatrale fu concepito durante il periodo in cui gli Stati Uniti stavano per fare il loro ingresso nel secondo conflitto mondiale. Portato alla prima con un cast di interpreti assai conosciuti, divenne molto popolare (anche perché è adatto alle rappresentazioni di compagnie di dilettanti) e vinse il premio Pulitzer del 1943 per il teatro.
