- بينلوبياد هي رواية للكاتبة مارغريت أتوود تم نشره في عام 2005 كجزء من المجموعة الكتابية الأولى من سلسلة أسطورة «كنونغت» والتي تحتوي علي إعادة كتابة للالأساطير القديمة من منظور معاصر. عبر رواية بينيلوبياد، تقوم «بينيلوب» بحكي ذكرياتها من خلال أوديسي، والحياة في العالم السفلي مع هاديس وأوديسيوس وهيلين وعلاقاتها مع والديها. كما يوجد مجموعة من المنشدين من الخادمات عددهم اثني عشر والذين اتهمهم أوديسيوس بالخيانة وقام تيليماكوس بشنقهم. يضم السرد وجهات النظر المختلفة عن الاحداث. تستخدم الخادمات نمط جديد من الإنشاد متضمنه قافية قفز الحبل والرثاء والبالاد والأغنية والمحاكمات وعدة أنواع من الأغاني. تدور الفكرة الرئيسية للرواية وتشمل آثار رواية القصص ووجهات النظر المختلفة وازدواجية المعايير بين الجنسين والطبقات ونزاهة القضاء. استخدمت أتوود الشخصيات والأحداث المنظورة من الأساطير اليونانية مثل روايتها «اللص العروس» والقصة القصيرة «نمط حياة قصور الجنة» وقصائد «سيرس: قصائد الطين» و«هيلين الطروادية تفعل الرقصة المضادة» ولكنها أستخدمت اسطورة روبرت غريفز اليونانية واصدار الأوديسة لكلا من أي. في. ريوا وإصدار دي. سي. اتش. ريوا للتحضير لهذه الرواية. ترجم الكتاب إلى 28 لغة وتم إصداره من خلال 33 ناشر في جميع أنحاء العالم في نفس الوقت. وبلغت نسبة بيع الكتاب في الأسواق الكندية حدتها وحصل الكتاب علي مركز ضمن لائحة الكتب الأكثر مبيعا والمركز الأول في جائزة ماكلين والمركز الثاني في جلوب اند ميل ولكنه لم يحصل علي أي مركز على قائمة صحيفة نيويورك تايمز كأفضل كتاب مبيعا في السوق الأمريكي. وقد علق بعض النقاد علي اسلوب اتوود المعتاد في الكتابة ولكن البعض الآخر من النقاد وجد بعض الجوانب الجديدة في كتابتها مثل الانشدات من قبل الخادمات. تم إنتاج الإصدار المسرحي بمشاركة المركز الكندي الوطني للفنون وشركة شكسبير الملكية البريطانية وتم عرض المسرحية علي مسرح «سوان» في «ستراتفورد أبون أفون» والمركز الوطني للفنون في«أوتاوا» خلال صيف وخريف عام 2007 مع فريق عمل مكون من الإناث وتحت قيادة المخرجة بوشل جوزيت-مينغو. وفي موسم الشتاء 2011/2012، تم العرض الأول في «تورونتو» من خلال مسرح نايت وود، مع الفريق النسوي بقيادة المخرجة كيلي ثورنتون وبطولة التي جسدت شخصية «بينيلوب». Forma part de la col·lecció Canongate Myth Series de l'editorial escocesa independent Canongate Books. La col·lecció on s'emmarca l'obra consta d'una sèrie de novel·les curtes basades en antics mites de diferents cultures. A Espanya, es publica en castellà l'any 2005 a mans de l'editorial Salamandra sota el títol de Penélope y las doce criadas amb la traducció de Gemma Rovira Ortega. La novel·la ha estat reeditada per la mateixa editorial en febrer del 2020. Per una altra banda, l'editorial Blackie Books ha inclòs aquesta obra a la seva edició de l'Odissea (2020) en castellà, edició que forma part de la col·lecció Blackie Books: Clásicos liberados. The Penelopiad és una reinterpretació del poema èpic grec l'Odissea, atribuït a Homer, i contada des de la perspectiva de l'esposa de l'heroi Odisseu, Penèlope, i les seves dotze criades. Fue publicada originalmente en 2005 como parte de la serie de mitos de Canongate Books (originalmente, Canongate Myth Series), en la que un grupo de escritores contemporáneos reescribe mitos de la Antigüedad. En este libro, Penélope revive los eventos narrados en la Odisea y reflexiona sobre su vida en el Hades, sobre Helena de Troya y sobre las relaciones con sus padres. Un coro formado por las doce criadas, a quienes Odiseo consideró traidoras, y a quienes Telémaco ahorcó, interrumpen el relato de Penélope para dar su punto de vista sobre los hechos. It was published in 2005 as part of the first set of books in the Canongate Myth Series where contemporary authors rewrite ancient myths. In The Penelopiad, Penelope reminisces on the events of the Odyssey, life in Hades, Odysseus, Helen of Troy, and her relationships with her parents. A Greek chorus of the twelve maids, who Odysseus believed were disloyal and whom Telemachus hanged, interrupt Penelope's narrative to express their view on events. The maids' interludes use a new genre each time, including a jump-rope rhyme, a lament, an idyll, a ballad, a lecture, a court trial and several types of songs. The novella's central themes include the effects of story-telling perspectives, double standards between the sexes and the classes, and the fairness of justice. Atwood had previously used characters and storylines from Greek mythology in fiction such as her novel The Robber Bride, short story The Elysium Lifestyle Mansions, and poems "Circe: Mud Poems" and "Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing." She used Robert Graves' The Greek Myths and E. V. Rieu and D. C. H. Rieu's version of the Odyssey to prepare for this novella. The book was translated into 28 languages and released simultaneously around the world by 33 publishers. In the Canadian market, it peaked on the best seller lists at number one in Maclean's and number two in The Globe and Mail, but did not place on the New York Times Best Seller List in the American market. Some critics found the writing to be typical of Atwood or even one of her finest works, while others found some aspects, like the chorus of maids, disagreeable. A theatrical version was co-produced by the Canadian National Arts Centre and the British Royal Shakespeare Company. The play was performed at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa during the summer and fall of 2007 by an all-female cast led by director Josette Bushell-Mingo. In January 2012, the show opened in Toronto at Nightwood Theatre, with an all-female cast led by director Kelly Thornton and starring Megan Follows as Penelope.
