- La Simfonia núm. 5 Lenore en mi major, op. 177, és una simfonia composta per Joachim Raff el 1872. Està inspirada en el poema (1773) de l'escriptor gòtic alemany . Joachim Raff va arribar al zenit de la seva carrera i va aconseguir el cim de l'èxit com a compositor gràcies a l'enorme clamor del públic que va obtenir la seva Simfonia núm. 5, subtitulada Lenore. Ja amb anterioritat, la història d'amor de Lenore i Wilhelm havia estat portada al camp de la música, encara que en forma d'oratori, pel compositor txec Anton Reicha. Raff era un compositor molt acostumat a treballar en la forma del poema simfònic, sobretot en la seva època com a secretari i orquestrador de Franz Liszt, i va veure en aquesta història en què una promesa d'amor és duta a terme més enllà de la mort, un projecte en el qual desenvolupar les seves enormes capacitats per a la composició, i assegurar-se encara més després de l'èxit de la seva , el favor no només del públic sinó també de la crítica musical més exigent. La simfonia va connectar ràpidament amb el sentiment popular, segurament perquè, i a diferència d'altres tantes obres inspirades en amors impossibles, els protagonistes d'aquesta, tant Lenore, una noia que viu en un poble, com Wilhelm, un simple soldat, van connectar amb la gent senzilla que s'hi va veure reflectida. - Symphony No. 5 in E major (Lenore), Op. 177, was composed by Joachim Raff between 1870 and 1872. It is generally regarded as his best symphony and the most frequently performed and recorded today. It was inspired by Gottfried August Bürger's ballad Lenore, set during the Seven Years' War. The symphony came during a time of great success for Raff. He already achieved fame with his Third and Fourth symphonies, as well as the opera Dame Kobold, so the orchestras were eager to perform it. The premiere took place in December 1872 at a private performance in Sonderhausen in front of an audience of 20. The first public performance took place in Berlin the following year and it was very well received. The work was performed in other places in Germany, as well as England and America. Ebenezer Prout reported that at the English premiere "those who were present will remember the sensation created by its performance". Raff described the symphony's programme: "The happiness of two lovers is interrupted by war. The time has come when he must go forth with his fellow soldiers and she remain behind alone.
