Il est célèbre pour avoir participé à partir de 1972 à la reconnaissance de la photographie couleur comme art à part entière dans les musées et les galeries d'art aux États-Unis à une époque où le noir et blanc était encore prédominant. Il considère qu'il existe deux sortes de photographe : l'analytique et le synthétique. Le premier analyse l'image et la structure selon ce qu'elle est dans l'espace physique. Le second crée l'espace de l'image et le structure selon ce qu'il veut analyser. Il met dans cette catégorie les peintres ou les artistes comme Jeff Wall. Il se considère comme un photographe analytique. Toute son œuvre est en fait une étude de la photographie. Ce médium est pour lui un lieu d'exploration pour des phénomènes uniques à la photo. S'insurgeant contre l'esthétisme qui dominait la photographie américaine de l'époque, Stephen Shore refuse la sélection artistique. Tout mérite d'être photographié, sans distinction aucune. Son œuvre est ainsi constituée de magnifiques photographies de paysages aussi bien que de clichés des repas qu'il prend dans les hôtels miteux du Texas. Sa démarche était particulièrement novatrice en ce sens. Comme pour son contemporain William Eggleston, le choix de la couleur participe de cette lutte contre l'esthétisme, au profit d'un regard plus objectif sur la réalité vernaculaire de l'Amérique. (fr)
- Stephen Shore (born October 8, 1947) is an American photographer known for his images of banal scenes and objects, and for his pioneering use of color in art photography. His books include Uncommon Places (1982) and American Surfaces (1999), photographs that he took on cross-country road trips in the 1970s. In 1975 Shore received a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1971, he was the first living photographer to be exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where he had a solo show of black and white photographs. He was selected to participate in the influential group exhibition "New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape", at the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House (Rochester, New York), in 1975-1976. In 1976 he had a solo exhibition of color photographs at the Museum of Modern Art. In 2010 he received an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society. (en)
