- Die International Society of Limnology, abgekürzt SIL, basierend auf der ursprünglichen Bezeichnung Societas Internationalis Limnologiae Theoreticae et Applicatae, ist eine im Jahre 1922 durch den Deutschen August Thienemann und den Schweden Einar Naumann gegründete internationale Fachgesellschaft, die sich der Limnologie und dem Management der Binnengewässerökosysteme (Seen, Flüsse usw.) widmet. Ihre frühere Bezeichnung und Abkürzung im deutschsprachigen Raum war neben der oben genannten lateinischen Form die deutsche Form Internationale Vereinigung für Theoretische und Angewandte Limnologie (IVL); im angelsächsischen Bereich wurde sie als International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology bezeichnet. Die Gesellschaft hat derzeit (2008) rund 2800 Mitglieder. Die SIL publiziert die folgenden wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen:
* Die wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift Fundamental and Applied Limnology, E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung – Science Publishers, ISSN 1863-9135; bis 31. Dezember 2006 trug die Zeitschrift den Titel Archiv für Hydrobiologie, den sie heute noch als Zweitnamen trägt
* Die SIL Occasional Publications, früher Mitteilungen (Communications) genannt, eine unregelmäßige Veröffentlichungsreihe über Einzelthemen
* Limnology in Developing Countries, eine Bücherserie
* Die Congress Proceedings, die noch den historischen Namen Verhandlungen Internationale Vereinigung für theoretische und angewandte Limnologie tragen Anlässlich der 50-Jahr-Feier hielt die traditionsbewusste Gesellschaft 1972 ein Jubiläumssymposium in Deutschland (in Kiel) ab; der 75. Jahrestag wurde 1997 in Frankfurt am Main in Anwesenheit des langjährigen Generalsekretärs der SIL, Robert G. Wetzel, gewürdigt. Die Jahrestagungen finden traditionell in einem Drei-Jahres-Rhythmus statt, zuletzt in Melbourne (Australien, 2001), Lahti (Finnland, 2004), Montréal (Canada, 2007), Kapstadt (Südafrika, 2010) und Budapest (Ungarn, 2013). Auf ihnen wird ihre höchste Auszeichnung, die Naumann-Thienemann-Medaille verliehen. (de)
- The International Society of Limnology (SIL) is an international scientific society that disseminates information among limnologists, those who study all aspects of inland waters, including their physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and management. It was founded by August Thienemann and Einar Naumann in 1922 as the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology and Societas Internationalis Limnologiae. It had about 2.800 members in 2008. SIL celebrated its 100th anniversary at a meeting in Berlin, Germany in August 2022. SIL publishes the following scientific publications:
* the journal Fundamental and Applied Limnology:Archiv für Hydrobiologie ISSN 1863-9135 ; prior to 2007, it was called Archiv für Hydrobiologie.
* Communications (Mitteilungen), irregular publication.
* Limnology in Developing Countries, a book series.
* Congress proceedings, until 2007, published as Verhandlungen Internationale Vereinigung für theoretische und angewandte Limnologie.
* SIL has discontinued publication of the Verhandlungen and has replaced it with a peer-reviewed journal entitled Inland Waters. The new journal was launched at the 31st SIL Congress in Cape Town, 2010, with first publication in 2011. The journal is supported by the electronic submission and tracking system of the Freshwater Biological Association. Manuscripts will be published consecutively online (as accepted) and quarterly in paper format. Access to the electronic version is provided to all SIL members and subscribers. (en)
- La Sociedad Internacional de Limnología es una sociedad científica internacional que disemina información entre limnólogos, quienes estudian todos los aspectos de aguas continentales, incluyendo su física, química, biología, geología, y administración. Esta Sociedad fue fundada por August Thienemann y Einar Naumann en 1922 como la Asociación Internacional de Limnología Teórica y Aplicada y Societas Internationalis Limnologiae, SIL. Para el año 2008 tenía aproximadamente 2.800 miembros. SIL publica las siguientes publicaciones científicas:
* La revista Limnología Fundamental y Aplicada:Archiv für Hydrobiologie; antes del año 2007 se llamaba Archiv für Hydrobiologie.
* Comunicaciones (Mitteilungen), publicación irregular.
* Limnología en Países en desarrollo, una serie de libros.
* Proceedings o actas de congresos, hasta 2007, publicado como Verhandlungen Internationale Vereinigung für theoretische und angewandte Limnologie.
* SIL ha descontinuado la publicación del Verhandlungen y ha sido reemplazada con una revista de revisión por pares llamada Inland Waters. La revista fue lanzada en el 31.º Congreso de la SIL en Ciudad del Cabo, 2010, con la primera publicación en 2011. La revista se mantiene y apoya con la aplicación electrónica y sistema de seguimiento de la Asociación Biológica De agua dulce. Los manuscritos se publican consecutivamente en línea (conforme son aceptados) y trimestrales en formato impreso.
