- Die Experimental Lakes Area (kurz: ELA) ist eine Forschungseinrichtung des DFO im Kenora District Kanadas. Diese umfasst 58 Seen mit ihren zugehörigen Einzugsgebieten und einigen zusätzlichen kleineren Flussabschnitten. In diesem Areal wurden Ganzsee-Experimente durchgeführt, um ein besseres Verständnis von aquatischen Ökosystemen zu erhalten. Über die Jahrzehnte sind Versuche in beeindruckender Größenordnung durchgeführt wurden, wie beispielsweise die Errichtung eines Dammes, die Einrichtung von Fischfarmen oder die Zugabe von Umweltgiften in ganze Seen. Viele Ergebnisse der Experimente haben Eingang in die Umweltpolitik gefunden und Bereiche der Limnologie, Hydrologie und Klimatologie maßgeblich beeinflusst. (de)
- IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA, known as ELA before 2014) is an internationally unique research station encompassing 58 formerly pristine freshwater lakes in Kenora District Ontario, Canada. Previously run by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, after being de-funded by the Canadian Federal Government, the facility is now managed and operated by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and has a mandate to investigate the aquatic effects of a wide variety of stresses on lakes and their catchments. IISD-ELA uses the whole ecosystem approach and makes long-term, whole-lake investigations of freshwater focusing on eutrophication. In an article published in AAAS's well-known scientific journal Science, Eric Stokstad described ELA's "extreme science" as the manipulation of whole lake ecosystem with ELA researchers collecting long-term records for climatology, hydrology, and limnology that address key issues in water management. The site has influenced public policy in water management in Canada, the US, and around the world. Minister of State for Science and Technology, Gary Goodyear, argued that "our government has been working hard to ensure that the Experimental Lakes Area facility is transferred to a non-governmental operator better suited to conducting the type of world-class research that can be undertaken at this facility" and that "[t]he federal government has been leading negotiations in order to secure an operator with an international track record." On April 1, 2014, the International Institute for Sustainable Development announced that it had signed three agreements to ensure that it will be the long-term operator of the research facility and that the facility would henceforth be called IISD Experimental Lakes Area. Since taking over the facility, IISD has expanded the function of the site to include educational and outreach opportunities and a broader research portfolio. (en)
- La Région des lacs expérimentaux (RLE) est un centre de recherche canadien de renommée internationale regroupant 58 lacs d'eau douce dans le district de Kenora, Ontario, Canada. Dépendant du ministère des Pêches et Océans Canada, le centre a pour mandat d'investiguer les effets sur la vie aquatique de divers types de pollution susceptibles d'affecter les lacs et leur population. La RLE utilise une démarche écosystémique et mène des recherches de longue durée, portant sur des lacs entiers, en étudiant tout spécialement les processus d'eutrophisation. Grâce à cette recherche scientifique de pointe, agissant sur des écosystèmes lacustres durant plus de 40 ans, les chercheurs de la RLE ont recueilli des données de longue durée sur la climatologie, l'hydrologie et la limnologie, qui sont de première importance pour la gestion des ressources hydriques. La RLE a influencé les politiques publiques en matière de gestion de l'eau au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe. (fr)
