- Le château de Severndroog est une folie située à Oxleas Wood, sur Shooter's Hill, dans le sud-est de Londres, dans le Royal Borough de Greenwich. Il a été conçu par l'architecte Richard Jupp, avec la première pierre posée le 2 avril 1784 . Il a été construit pour commémorer le commodore Sir William James qui, en avril 1755, a attaqué et détruit la forteresse insulaire de Suvarnadurg (alors rendue en anglais : Severndroog) de l'empire Maratha sur la côte ouest de l'Inde, entre Mumbai et Goa. James est décédé en 1783 et le château a été construit en sa mémoire par sa veuve, Lady James of Eltham. Désigné édifice classé Grade II * en 1954 , le château de style gothique fait 19 mètres de haut, a une forme triangulaire, avec une tourelle hexagonale à chaque coin. De sa position élevée, il offre une vue sur Londres, avec des caractéristiques dans sept comtés différents visibles par temps clair. (fr)

While commonly referred to as a castle due to its turrets, it was built as a folly, as can be discerned by its small size and because it has never functioned as a castle. It is situated in Castle Wood, on Shooter's Hill in south-east London in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It was built to commemorate Commodore Sir William James who, in April 1755, attacked and destroyed the island fortress of Suvarnadurg (then rendered in English: Severndroog) of the Maratha Empire on the western coast of India, between Mumbai and Goa. James died in 1783 and the folly was built as a memorial to him by his widow, Lady James of Eltham. Designated a Grade II* listed building in 1954, the Gothic-style castle is 63 feet (19 m) high and triangular in section, with a hexagonal turret at each corner. From its elevated position, it offers views across London, with features in seven different counties visible on a clear day. (en)

Il castello venne costruito in ricordo del commodoro Sir William James, vincitore della battaglia della (poi reso in inglese con Severndroog) appartenente all'Impero Maratha sulla costa occidentale indiana tra Mumbai e Goa. Dopo la sua morte avvenuta nel 1783, la moglie, Lady Anne James, decise di erigergli un memoriale. Il castello di interesse storico culturale classificato di Grado II è altro 19 metri, ha una base triangolare con torrette esagonali su ogni lato.
