Bonolis also presented the show, together with .The competition was divided into two different sections. The "Big Artists" section included sixteen well-known singers, performing a previously unheard song, and it was won by Marco Carta's "La forza mia". The "Newcomers" section, featuring ten debuting or little known artists, was won by Arisa, performing the song "Sincerità". For the first time, a third section was added. Called Sanremofestival.59, it was completely held through the web, and it was won by Ania with the song "Buongiorno gente".   • Il cinquantanovesimo Festival di Sanremo si svolse al Teatro Ariston di Sanremo dal 17 al 21 febbraio 2009 con la conduzione di Paolo Bonolis, alla sua seconda conduzione del Festival, affiancato da Luca Laurenti e con la partecipazione di diversi co-conduttori nelle cinque serate: Paul Sculfor e Alessia Piovan per la prima serata, Nir Lavi e Eleonora Abbagnato per la seconda serata, Thyago Alves e Gabriella Pession per la terza serata, Ivan Olita per la quarta serata, David Gandy e Maria De Filippi per la finale. I 26 cantanti partecipanti al Festival vennero divisi in due categorie: Artisti (composta da 16 cantanti noti) e Proposte (composta da 10 artisti emergenti): a trionfare nella sezione Artisti fu Marco Carta con La forza mia, mentre a vincere tra le Proposte fu la rivelazione Arisa con Sincerità, brano che ebbe poi molto successo e divenne ben presto un tormentone. Parecchie polemiche furono causate da Povia, la cui canzone Luca era gay parlava di un omosessuale che diveniva eterosessuale, causando diverse proteste da parte della comunità LGBT mentre diverse associazioni e movimenti cattolici presero invece le difese del cantante. La direzione artistica dell'evento venne curata da Paolo Bonolis, affiancato nella direzione artistico-musicale da Gianmarco Mazzi, la regia da Stefano Vicario, la scenografia fu disegnata da Gaetano Castelli e l'orchestra venne diretta dal maestro Bruno Santori.
