- The boat SS Gairsoppa was a British steam merchant ship built in Jarrow and launched in 1918. After a long civilian career, she saw service during the Second World War. She was named after the town of Gerusoppa on the banks of River Sharavati in Karnataka, India, which due to its easy access to water transportation and as a distribution centre for crops including pepper, was the commercial capital for centuries. She sailed with several convoys, before joining Convoy SL 64 in February 1941. Gairsoppa left the convoy when she exhausted the majority of her fuel and was making her way to Galway, Ireland, when a German U-boat fired a torpedo that sank her with the loss of 85 lives. The wreck of the Gairsoppa was discovered in 2011, and it was announced that an operation to recover its cargo of silver bullion, with an estimated value of £150 million, would begin in 2012. On 18 July 2013 Odyssey Marine Exploration, of Tampa, Florida, US, reported that it had recovered 110 tons of silver. (en)

Nel luglio del 2012 vengono quindi recuperate 48 tonnellate del carico a opera della società specializzata in recuperi marini , che, secondo gli accordi presi con il Governo inglese, ha trattenuto l'80% di quanto riportato alla luce. - Het SS Gairsoppa was een Brits stoomschip, gebouwd bij Palmer’s Co, Newcastle. het werd tewater gelaten op 12 augustus 1919 onder de naam War Roebuck. Het werd in oktober van dat jaar vernoemd naar Gairsoppa, ter ere van deze watervallen in zuid-west India van die naam. Het schip had een lengte van 125 meter, was 16 meter breed en had een diepgang van 8,6 meter. Het mat 5.237 ton. De Gairsoppa voer voor de British India Steam Navigation Company en vervoerde kostbare lading in de Pacific en Indische Oceaan. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het op 17 februari 1941 op 300 mijl afstand van Ierland door een Duitse U-boot met een torpedo getroffen en tot zinken gebracht. In 2012 werd het wrak gevonden. Het lag op 4,7 kilometer diepte in de Atlantische Oceaan. De bergers van het Amerikaanse bedrijf Odyssey Marine Exploration troffen aan boord 48 ton zilver aan, met een totale waarde van 37 miljoen Amerikaanse dollar. (nl)
