- Robert Earl Lerner (* 8. Februar 1940 in New York City) ist ein US-amerikanischer Historiker und emeritierter Professor für mittelalterliche Geschichte an der Northwestern University. Lerner studierte an der University of Chicago (B.A.) und promovierte 1964 bei Joseph R. Strayer an der Princeton University. Lerners Hauptforschungsgebiete umfassen mittelalterliche Häresien, Apokalyptik und Millenarismus. Außerdem hat er sich mit einer Reihe von Themen der mittelalterlichen Religions- und Geistesgeschichte auseinandergesetzt. Seine Hauptwerke sind Heresy of the Free Spirit in the Later Middle Ages (1972), The Powers of Prophecy (1983) und The Feast of Saint Abraham (2001). Auf deutsch sind unter anderem erschienen: Weissagungen über die Päpste (1985) und Neue Richtungen in der hoch- und spätmittelalterlichen Bibelexegese (1996). Zu den häufig zitierten Beiträgen Lerners gehört “Refreshment of the Saints” (1976) und “Ecstatic Dissent” (1992). Außerdem war er Mitautor eines in mehrere Sprachen übersetzten Lehrbuchs über die Westliche Zivilisation. Lerner ist Mitglied der Medieval Academy of America und der American Academy in Rome. Er ist ausgezeichnet worden von der Guggenheim Foundation, dem Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, dem Historischen Kolleg in München und dem Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. Im Jahr 1996 wurde er mit dem Max-Planck-Forschungspreis geehrt. - Robert E. Lerner (born 1940 in New York) is an American medieval historian and professor of history emeritus at Northwestern University. Lerner gained his B.A. at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. at Princeton in 1964, where he studied with Joseph R. Strayer. Lerner has specialised in medieval heresy and millennial eschatology, as well as writing on a variety of topics in medieval religious and intellectual history. His major monographs are The Heresy of the Free Spirit in the Later Middle Ages (1972), The Powers of Prophecy (1983), and The Feast of Saint Abraham (2001). Prominent among his articles are the widely cited “Refreshment of the Saints” (1976) and “Ecstatic Dissent” (1992). In addition, he was the co-author of a best-selling Western Civilization textbook, a work translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean. Lerner is a fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and the American Academy in Rome. In the course of his career he has received honours and awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Historisches Kolleg in Munich, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and the Max-Planck Gesellschaft of the Federal Republic of Germany. He has been guest lecturer at many American colleges and universities, the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, and such European universities as Berlin, Oxford, Heidelberg, and Florence. He is an active member on the editorial boards of a variety of historical journals. Lerner recently published a biography of the medieval historian Ernst Kantorowicz and is currently preparing an edition of a treatise written during the Great Schism of the West.
