The first railway in colonial South Australia was a line from the port of Goolwa on the River Murray to an ocean harbour at Port Elliot, which first operated in December 1853, before its completion in May 1854. Today the state has 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in) broad gauge suburban railways in Adelaide, a number of country freight lines, and key 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) standard gauge links to other states.

Ursprünglich sollte generell Breitspur verwendet werden, es wurden aber auch Linien in Kapspur (Schmalspur) gebaut, so auch 1878 die Great Northern Railway nach Norden. Die Transaustralische Eisenbahn nach Westenaustralien hingegen wurde 1917 in Normalspur angelegt. Heute ist die Normalspur in South Australia dominant. Die Schmalspurstrecke nach Broken Hill, die weiter nach Sydney führt, wurde 1970 auf Normalspur geändert, wie zuvor schon die Verbindung zum Northern Territory. Die Breitspur-Verbindung Adelaide–Melbourne folgte 1995. Fast anderen Schmalspurstrecken und viele der Breitspurstrecken in South Australia sind mittlerweile stillgelegt.
